Pleasant Valley Sparkling Wine - Fifteen thousand bottles of sparkling wine is mentioned in the Bath Advocate, as one week’s product of the Pleasant Valley Wine Company’s works.

Poached Fish - The Milo Game Constable undertook the other day to enforce the law against certain parties who had been taking fish out of season, from Lake Keuka, and selling the same. Unfortunately for the case the witnesses relied on by the constable, “didn’t know nothin’” Persons so densely ignorant, it is rare to find. One did not even know a lake trout. All this is funny, but then it is not always safe to be so ignorant.

100 Years Ago January 24, 1923 First Snowplow in County - The Yates County Auto Club have organized a committee of eighteen businessmen, and last Friday appeared before the Board of Supervisors and the road committee at their special meeting. The proposition was to offer all aid possible in order that some action would be taken to provide the proper machinery for keeping the roads of the county open and free from snow. N.W. Plaisted, Supervisor for the Town of Milo, however, hit upon a happy idea. He called a meeting of the Milo Board, and they voted the necessary money, signed the contract, and a big 3,000-pound plow is on the way and should be here in a day or so. This big V-shaped plow will be made a part of the ten-ton caterpillar tractor which is owned by the town of Milo.

Deadly Locomotive Explosion - The explosion of a boiler on New York Central freight locomotive No. 5129 at Moreland on Nov. 11, which cost the lives of four men (including two from Torrey) and the injury of three others, was caused by an “overheated crown sheet, due to low water.” This is the official verdict of inspectors for the interstate commerce commission, according to a report from Washington. Frank Harding of Sayre, engineer on locomotive 5129, was fatally inured in the blast, dying while being taken to the hospital. W.T. Thompson, of Torrey, a student fireman on 5129; F.N. Fermer, a brakeman on 5129, and C.W. Hostrander, of Dresden, a fireman in locomotive 2947, a helper engine preceding No. 5129 were the other victims.

Shopping Local Saves - A Penn Yan woman went to Rochester to get the benefit of the January sales and invested quite largely. After her return she says she thought she would see how much she had saved by the transaction and so asked for prices of the same articles in some of the best home stores, and found to her dismay that she could have done fully as well or better in Penn Yan in almost every purchase, and saved her railroad fare besides. Moral: Try your own merchants first and keep the money in your own town if you can do as well as in a city.

75 Years Ago January 22, 1948 Penn Yan Treasurer Acquitted - Ernest B. Reed, former treasurer for the Village of Penn Yan for more than 20 years, and indicted by the grand jury on nine separate charges of falsifying village accounts and misappropriating funds was acquitted Friday night. The jury took only about two hours and 15 minutes to arrive at this unanimous decision. The final hours of the trial, when he was on the stand in his own defense, were highlighted by the first revelations of a “little black book,” in which the former treasurer stated he kept a record of out-of-the office transactions and such frowned upon practices as using tax checks without putting them through the general fund and then replacing them with cash.

Greenidge to Double Electricity Production - Construction of an addition which will double the production capacity of the New York State Electric and Gas corporation’s 60,000 horsepower Greenidge generating station at Dresden will start this spring. The addition is a part of the company’s continuing expansion program to replace in part power now purchased by the company. It will also meet increasing demands for electricity in a wide are in the Geneva, and Auburn districts also Bath, Hornell, Dansville, and Perry areas will be served, with the construction of a new high voltage line from the Dresden station to Dansville. Through its interconnecting high voltage lines, the addition also will help supply increasing loads in Ithaca, Elmira, and Corning areas. The installation at Greenidge station will include two steam boilers each capable of producing 288,000 lbs. of steam an hour at 850 lbs. a square inch pressure and at 900 degrees F. Already received at the Greenidge plant is a locomotive which will be used on the plant’s own switches. The enlarged generating station will consume some 20 carloads of coal daily when in full use.

Moravec Cabin Burns Overnight - Thursday night the beautiful log cabin of Barney Moravec, Penn Yan well driller, was razed by flames. Located in the woods on the west shore of Lake Keuka several miles south of Keuka College on the Ogoyago point, 11 miles from Penn Yan, the conflagration escaped attention and the loss was not reported until Friday morning when James Davis, local contractor, went there to resume work he had been doing the previous day. He found a pile of smoking embers.

50 Years Ago Jan. 25, 1973

Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital has received a grant of $38,000 to establish a medical library to be known and designated as the Nelson & Daisy Jones Memorial Library. An additional $5,000 will be given for the purchase of medical periodicals and supplements for the continuing education of the hospital staff.

More than 70 4-H members attended an officers training school conducted by the Yates County 4-H Council at an evening session last week in Penn Yan Academy. Council officers Alan Travis, Glenn Hammond, Yvonne Sutton, all of Penn Yan; Dana Gibson of Dundee; and Marlene McMinn of Branchport, presented the program.
