Feb. 21 Class B2 (#9) Penn Yan 54, (#8) Williamson/Marion 43 The Mustangs won their first game of Sectionals, beating Williamson/Marion by 11. The win moved PYA into the Class B2 quarterfinals, where they were set to play the class’s top seed Dansville on Mar. 24. Class D1 (#6) South Seneca 65, (#11) Naples 21 South Seneca dominated Naples in the first round of Sectionals, knocking the Big Green out of the tournament and finalizing Naples’ record at 2-18. Ciera Babcock and Chloe Scott led Seneca with 17 points apiece, while Naples top scorers were Brynn Davis, Grace Hebding and Polly Bay, who each scored five points in the game. With a very young roster this season, Naples will only lose two players to graduation, three-year players Brynn Davis and Danielle Clark. Davis and Clark are the only players on Naples’ bench for whom the ‘22-’23 season wasn’t their first year on the team. Naples had just one junior on the team this year in Hannah Christmas, with the rest of the team composed of freshmen and sophomores. Depending on how many returning players they have next season, Naples could either have a very different roster in 2023 or one that is full of second-year players eager to prove themselves. Feb. 22 Class C1 (#6) Bloomfield 65, (#11) Marcus Whitman 38 During the regular season, Bloomfield and Marcus Whitman were two of the the top three teams in the Finger Lakes League’s West division. Bloomfield and Dundee/ Bradford battled through the ‘22-’23 basketball season for the FLW’s top spot, eventually tying at the end of the season, with Whitman consistently holding down the #3 spot, just a couple wins behind the Bombers and BraveScots. So, when Bloomfield and Whitman were paired up for the first round of Sectionals, it was a game that was hotly anticipated by both teams, as well as their fans. The game itself wasn’t as close as Whitman would’ve liked, however, and the Bombers came out on top, winning by 27 points. The leading scorers for Bloomfield were Lily Baughman with 20 points and Calla McCombs with 19. Whitman’s season ended with a final record of 15-6. The Wildcats lose five seniors to graduation this year, including three-year vets and season starters Olivia Herod, Natalie Cotroneo, Aurora Woodworth and Katie Bootes, as well first-year player Tori Brooks. The rest of Whitman’s roster this season consisted of two eighth-graders, two freshmen and four sophomores, giving Whitman a ton of potential next season. Class C2 (#4) Dundee/Bradford 57, (#13) Wheatland-Chili 20 Surprising no one, the BraveScots dominated their first game of Sectionals against Wheatland-Chili, almost tripling the Wildcats’ score. Kendall Parker led D/B with 23 points, while Lily Hall scored 10 and Kailey Yeoman scored nine. With the win, Dundee/ Bradford was set to face Caledonia-Mumford (#5) in the second round of the C2 tournament on Feb. 25. Feb. 24 Class B2 (#1) Dansville 56, (#9) Penn Yan 45 PYA played a hard-fought game, keeping pace with the top seed in the Class B2 tournament, but ultimately couldn’t overtake Dansville, finishing out the season with an overall record of 5-16. Dansville led the entire game, but Penn Yan kept it close, with the score 12-10 in the first period, 27-22 at the half and 38-35 after three. Dansville pulled away in the fourth, however, taking the win after a battle of a game. Chelsie Tyler led Dansville with 20 points and four rebounds. Also for Dansville, Megan Tyler had 14 points and four rebounds and Aynsley Belcher got seven points, 13 rebounds and two steals. For Penn Yan, Bailey Cooper scored 24 points and Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger scored 13. With the win, Danville moved on to play Wellsville (#4) in the B2 semifinals. Penn Yan had a very young team this year, with over half the team composed of freshmen and one 8th-grader, and had no seniors on the roster, meaning the Mustangs will lose no one to graduation. While Penn Yan didn’t have the most successful season, they’ve got plenty of potential and will likely have a bench full of more experienced players in the ‘23-’24 season. Feb. 25 Class C2 (#4) Dundee/Bradford 51, (#5) Caledonia-Mumford 47 Dundee/Bradford won a very close matchup against Cal-Mum in the quarterfinals of the Class C2 tournament, moving on to face C2’s top seed, Lyons, in the semifinals on Mar. 1. Cal-Mum ended their season with a final record of 14-8 after a winning first-round game against Campbell-Savona. Kendall Parker led the BraveScots once again, scoring 20 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Also for the ‘Scots, Lily Hall and Alissa Eaves each scored 10 points, with Hall also getting eight rebounds and Eaves grabbing three rebounds and a steal. While Dundee/Bradford proved themselves one of the most powerful forces in the Finger Lakes West this season, they’ll face a tough opponent in Lyons, who finished the season tied for second in the highly competitive Wayne League with a record of 17-3 and have two Sectional games under their belt where the Lions have won by significant margins. For fans of the FLW, who watched D/B and Bloomfield battle to a tie for the league’s top spot, the possibility exists that the two teams will face each other in Regionals, should both teams win their respective classes in Sectionals. Both teams have their work cut out for them though. Dundee/ Bradford was set to face C2’s top seed in their next game, and then the winner of C2’s #3 Pavilion and #2 Batavia/ Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Bloomfield had C1’s #2 Oakfield-Alabama for their next matchup, followed by the winner of C1’s #1 Canisteo-Greenwood and #5 Alexander in the finals if they win that game. Boys Basketball Sectionals Feb. 21 Class C1 (#9) Marcus Whitman 47, (#8) Bloomfield 31 Marcus Whitman beat Bloomfield in the first round of the C1 bracket, earning them a shot against the #1 seed in C1, Rochester Academy on Feb. 24th. Whitman’s regular season record ended up at 8-12 coming into the tourney, while Bloomfield was 10-10. Whitman started the match off with a 19-2 run in the first period and while Bloomfield fought hard to come back, it wasn’t enough to take the game from the Wildcats. Brody Royston led Whitman with 19 points, while teammates Bryce Tomion and Connor Gorton each scored eight. For the Bombers, Cameron Smith scored 15 points with nine rebounds and Tyler Roger scored 10 points with seven rebounds. Class C3 (#9) C.G. Finney 60, (#8) Dundee/ Bradford 55 Dundee/Bradford lost a close one to C.G. Finney in the first round of the Class C3 tournament. The Finney Falcons were led by a wide margin by Ethan Krog, who scored nearly half of Finney’s points with 25, drained six 3-pointers and went 5/6 in free throws. Finney’s next top scorer was Tyus Rhodes with 10 points. Leading scorers for Dundee/Bradford were Ryan McTamney with 21 points, Logan Buchanan with 16 points and nine rebounds and Nick Slavick with seven points and eight rebounds. Dundee/ Bradford ended their season with a total record of 12-9, including their Sectional game. With the end of the season, D/B loses eight seniors to graduation. This includes most of the season’s top scorers for the BraveScots, including Ryan McTamney, Cam Rosemier, Nick Slavick and Logan Buchanan, along with four-year veteran John Bell, Gabe Stiles, Dylan Monell and Miguel Candela. With the remaining roster consisting of five first-year juniors and sophomore Aidan Webster, who had a successful first year on the team this season, it will be interesting to see who the ‘Scots will have for the ‘23-’24 season. Feb. 22 Class B2 (#9) Penn Yan 44, (#8) Mynderse 38 In the first game of the first round of the Class B2 tournament, Penn Yan won an upset at Mynderse, beating the Blue Devils by six. PYA entered the tourney as the #9 seed, ending the regular season with a 3-17 record, while Mynderse came in as #8, finishing only slightly better at 4-16. Penn Yan had a slight advantage through the first half, leading 14-13 after one period and 22-17 after two. Mynderse rallied coming out of the half, outscoring PYA by 10 points and taking the lead in the third period, but Penn Yan took it back in the fourth, scoring 15-4 versus the Devils and sealing the deal at the freethrow line. Liam Chapman led the Mustangs with 16 points, while Tanyon Dunning scored 12. The top scorer for Mynderse was Jake Prayne with 12 points. The win set up Penn Yan to face the top B2 seed, Hornell, who finished their season at 16-4. Feb. 23 Class D1 (#8) Genesee Valley/Belfast 53, (#9) Naples 45 Naples, who entered the Class D1 bracket at the #9 seed after finishing the regular season at 2-18, fell to Genesee Valley/Belfast in the first round of the Sectional tournament. GV/B finished the regular season at 7-14. With their season officially over, Naples loses over half of this year’s team to graduation, with seven seniors on the roster out of a total 13 players. Graduating players include Dylan Bray and Adam Bay, both captains with three years on the team, as well as Evan Waldeis, Cade Rathbun, Raul Mendez, Kamren Rullo and Drew Reigelsperger. Every other player on the Green’s ‘22-’23 roster was a junior, leaving lots of room for young players to find a spot next year. Feb. 24 Class C1 (#1) Rochester Academy 72, (#9) Marcus Whitman 48 Rochester Academy proved why they were Class C1’s #1 seed, taking a big win over Marcus Whitman. The Wildcats’ season ended at 9-12 overall, while RA moved on to face Northstar Christian (#5) on Feb. 27th. A young team, Whitman loses just three seniors to graduation this season, including Connor Gorton, Bryce Tomion and Alex Lucas. With the rest of the team composed of freshmen and sophomores, MW will face a lack of experience on the bench next year, but a lot of potential for growth. Feb. 25 Class B2 (#1) Hornell 75, (#9) Penn Yan 51 After a close win against Mynderse in the first round of Sectionals, PYA found themselves in the tough position of facing off against Class B2’s #1 seed, Hornell, who finished the regular season with a 16-4 record, compared to Penn Yan’s almost reversed record of 3-17. It was clear the Mustangs had an uphill battle in front of them on Saturday night. Though the PYA boys fought hard to keep their tournament hopes alive, they were unable to overcome their underdog status and fell to Hornell, officially ending the Mustangs’ season. Hornell led the game from the start, doubling PYA’s score in the first period and pulling even further away in the second, with the scoreboard reading 39-22 going into the half. Penn Yan continued to fight in the second half, but were unable to keep pace with the Raiders, who took the win to move on to the B2 semifinals. Hornell’s next challenger was Wellsville (#4) on Mar. 1, with the winner of that game moving on to face the winner of a match between Dansville (#2) and LeRoy (#3) in the B2 finals. With the season officially over for Penn Yan, the Mustangs will be losing six seniors, including most of their starting line. Carson Nagpaul, Ashtian Dunning and Tanyon Dunning have played for the last two years and formed the core of this season’s team, while it was the first year for Ethan Morgan, Tone Druker and Owen Bishop, who offered some dynamic play throughout the season. With a fairly young team waiting in the wings, PYA has some talented players who could take center stage next year, including junior Liam Chapman and sophomore Matt Tones, who were both consistent lead scorers for the Mustangs this season.
