Rob Maeske The Chronicle-Express Softball May 8 Honeoye 23, Naples 1 In a season with a couple big wins and several big losses, Naples took their largest loss of the Spring with a 22-run deficit against Honeoye. The loss put Naples at 4-6. May 9 Penn Yan 10, Newark 5 The Mustangs picked up their third win in a row, improving to 5-4 with a win over Newark, who were 5-11. On the mound for Penn Yan, Giana Ficcaglia tallied 14 strikeouts. Ficcaglia, Leah Prather and Hailey Trank all doubled for the Mustangs. Double Header South Seneca/Romulus 8, Naples 7 South Seneca/Romulus 11, Naples 0 Naples lost both games to SSR in a double header, narrowly losing the first by one and not-so-narrowly losing the second with an 11-run shutout. With the losses, Naples was 4-8. May 11 Double Header Dundee/Bradford 18, Red Jacket 0 Dundee/Bradford 12, Red Jacket 2 The BraveScots won both games in their double header against Red Jacket, laying down a massive 18-0 shutout in the first game and a closer, but still 10-run win in the second. The first game was a callback to a double header DB played earlier this month against Harley-Allendale-Columbia, where the ‘Scots also won the first game with a 18-run shutout. The wins were the sixth and seventh in a row for Dundee/Bradford. In the first game, Addie Kendall pitched a complete no hitter for the BraveScots, netting 10 strikeouts. Kendall also went 3-3 at the plate, getting three runs and three RBI. Also for DB, Kailey Yeoman went 2-4 with three runs and an RBI, Makayla Schoffner went 2-3 with two runs and two RBI and Adalyn Tham went 2-4 with three runs and four steals. For game two, Tham took the mound, also pitching a nohitter and striking out six. DB’s top sluggers were Tham, who went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI, and Kailey Yeoman and Addie Kendall, who both went 2-3 with one run and two RBI apiece. Caddie O’Brien had an RBI for Red Jacket. Naples 16, Harley-Allendale-Columbia 2 The Green snapped a fiveloss streak with a big win over HAC, moving up to 5-8 for the season. HAC was 2-9. May 12 Double Header Penn Yan 3, Midlakes 2 Penn Yan 3, Midlakes 1 PYA played a double header against Midlakes, taking both games in close matches. Giana Ficcaglia pitched both games for the Mustangs, racking up 14 strikeouts in the first and 12 in the second. On the mound for Midlakes, Kenzie Turner got seven Ks in the first game and Emma LaBour got seven in game two. In game one, Leah Prather went 4-5 for Penn Yan and Hailey Trank went 4-4 with a double. In game two, Abby Fischer went 4-4 and Bri Naprava smacked a tworun double in the sixth. For Midlakes, Emma LaBour went 2-3 in the first game, while Olive Miles and Kenzie Turner went 2-3 in the second, with Turner doubling in the sixth. The back to back wins put PYA at 7-4 for the season. Dundee/Bradford 7, Honeoye 6 Dundee/Bradford won a close one to make it eight in a row, improving to 11-3 with a win against Honeoye. While Honeoye had the lead early, DB tied it up with a six-run frame in the sixth, taking the winning run in the last inning thanks to Madison Sutryk. Sutryk went 2-4, getting a triple and a double for three RBI and a run scored. Morgan Sutryk went 2-2 with an RBI. For the Bulldogs, who were 13-3 with the loss, Alexis Johnson and Alexa Colon both went 2-4 with a run and an RBI and Olivia Dibble went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Naples 17, Red Jacket 6 Naples made it two in a row with a win over Red Jacket. The Green improved to 6-8 with the win, while Red Jacket was 2-16. May 13, Strike Out Cancer Tournament at Williamsville East HS Frontier Senior 15, Penn Yan 2 Fairport 11, Penn Yan 1 PYA participated in the annual Strike Out Cancer Tournament, held this year at Williamsville East High School in Amherst, NY. Penn Yan lost both their games for the day. Waterloo won the tourney, with Pittsford Sutherland taking second and Bolivar-Richburg taking third. Baseball May 8 Bloomfield 10, Dundee/ Bradford 0 The BraveScots got shut out in a big way, evening out their record to 4-4 in the league and 5-5 overall. Braedon Smith went 4-4 with two doubles for the Bombers. Naples 8, Honeoye 5 Naples made it three in a row with a win over the Bulldogs, improving to 9-4 overall and 5-4 in the Finger Lakes. For the Big Green Machines, Drew Reigelsperger got two runs and an RBI, Traugott Uhlen had an RBI and a run, Charlie Grove had two RBI and Grady Grove went 2-3 with an RBI. The loss dropped Honeoye to 5-6. May 9 Penn Yan 3, Newark 2 The Mustangs started off their week with a win in Newark, improving to 6-3 in the league and 7-7 overall. The Reds dropped to 3-13. At the plate for Penn Yan, Mike Layton went 3-3, Owen Bishop went 1-3 with two runs, Tony Sciallo went 1-3 with one RBI and Liam Chapman went 1-4 with one RBI. Max Youngman led Newark’s efforts at the plate, going 3-4. On the mound, PYA’s Brady Emerson pitched five innings, getting seven strikeouts, while allowing three hits and two runs, before Chapman finished two in relief, tallying three Ks. Naples 11, South Seneca/ Romulus 1 Naples grabbed a big win over SSR to extend their streak to four. Naples took the lead right from the start, putting up nine runs before SSR was able to get one in the bottom of the fourth. Drew Reigelsperger pitched a complete game for Naples, getting six strikeouts and allowing four hits. At the plate for the Green, Charlie Grove went 2-4 with four RBI, Oliver Bruen went 3-4 with three RBI and a run, Traugott Uhlen went 2-3 with two RBI and two runs and Reigelsperger went 2-2 with a double and three runs. For SSR, Simon Appleby and Ethan Laverack both went 1-2, with Appleby scoring the team’s sole run. May 11 Midlakes 3, Penn Yan 0 Midlakes skunked Penn Yan Academy, improving to 6-7 in the Finger Lakes, while PYA fell to 6-4 in the league. Overall, Midlakes was 9-8 with the win. Penn Yan was 7-8. John DeBoover was on the mound for the Eagles, pitching a complete game and tallying 10 strikeouts, while allowing just three hits from PYA. Batting for Midlakes, DeBoover went 2-3 with an RBI and a run, Brady Day went 2-3 with a run, Braxton Wilkes got two RBI off a single and Kyle Kumkey got a hit. Brady Bouchard, Riley Griffiths and Tony Sciallo got Penn Yan’s hits. Bouchard pitched six innings for the Mustangs, fanning 14 batters. Red Jacket 5, Dundee/ Bradford 2 Dundee/Bradford got hit with their second loss in a row, losing by three to Red Jacket, who improved to 7-6 with the win. Naples 12, Harley-Allendale-Columbia 11 The Green narrowly edged out HAC for the fifth-straight win, improving to 11-4. HAC dominated the early game, scoring nine unanswered runs in the first three innings and another one in the fourth, before Naples was able to get two in the bottom of the inning. Naples rallied after that, stopping HAC in the fifth while scoring one and then really coming back with a nine-run final inning that turned the entire game in their favor. Charlie Grove pitched six innings for Naples, getting three strikeouts and Drew Reigelsperger got two Ks in relief. Top swingers for the Green included Reigelsperger, who went 3-4 with two runs and an RBI, Donivan Todd went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI, Grady Grove went 2-4 with a run and three RBI and Charlie Grove went 1-4 with a run and an RBI. For HAC, Sean Thody went 3-4 with three runs and an RBI, Salvatore Timpani went 2-3 with two runs and an RBI and Sammy Davis went 2-4 with a run and two RBI. The loss put HAC at 4-7. May 12 Honeoye 12, Dundee/Bradford 8 Dundee/Bradford’s losing streak extended to three with a loss to Honeoye. The Bulldogs improved to 7-6. On the mound for the BraveScots, Gabe Stiles pitched for four innings and change before being relieved by Chris Clancy, who got four strikeouts. In BraveScot batting, Eli Raplee went 2-3 with four RBI, Jeremy Stiles went 2-4 and Gabe Stiles had two RBI. Red Jacket 10, Naples 0 Naples got shut out by Red Jacket, ending their win streak and improving RJ to 9-6. Pitching for RJ, James Sibeto and Aidan Reed allowed a combined three hits in the game. Almost all of the Indians’ runs were scored in the second, which was a ninerun inning for RJ. Dylan Henry went 3-3 for Red Jacket with a run, Sibeto went 2-3 with two runs and Cale Herendeen went 2-2 with two runs. For Naples, Traugott Uhlen, Cade Rathburn and Adam Bay got the hits, but no runs. Grady Grove pitched for the Green, allowing nine hits and striking out five. May 13 Geneva 11, Penn Yan 1 Penn Yan took a hard loss to Geneva, losing by 10 and falling to 6-5 in the league and 7-9 overall. The Panthers improved to 10-1 in the Finger Lakes and 13-2 overall. Penn Yan’s next game was scheduled for May 15 against Pal-Mac, which was the Mustangs’ Senior Night, as it was their last home game of the season. Boys Lacrosse May 9 Wayne 18, Marcus Whitman 5 Whitman lost big to Wayne, who remained undefeated in the Finger Lakes League with seven league wins under their belt. The loss dropped MW to 7-6 overall and 6-3 in the league. Wayne started the first quarter with six unanswered goals and continued from there, outscoring the Wildcats in every period. Nate Michel, Alex Garrow and Tas Strickland all had four goals apiece for Wayne, with Michel also adding three assists, while PJ Ostrowski had three goals and three assists. For Whitman, Connor Gorton scored two goals, Rylan Weissinger had a goal and two assists, Brody Royston had a goal and one assist and Jared Lee scored one. Melkamu and Tariku Blueye each added an assist. In the goals, Wayne’s Dylan Coene made eight saves and Whitman’s Blake Dunton made 19. May 11 Fairport 8, Penn Yan 7 Penn Yan Academy lost a very close game to Fairport, evening their record to 6-6. The two teams mirrored each other in scoring in every quarter except the first, where Fairport got their one-goal advantage. Mitchell Monte led Fairport with four goals, while winning goalie Luke Ryan made seven saves. For the Mustangs, Carter Earl got two goals and an assist, Frank Ochoa scored two goals, Braden Fingar had a goal and an assist and Teagan Fingar added two assists. PYA goalie Will Thompson saved 14. Fairport improved to 6-8 with the win. May 13 Lake Shore 6, Penn Yan 5 The Mustangs fell to Lake Shore (Section VI) in overtime. It was Penn Yan’s fourth loss in a row and their second in a row where they lost by a single goal. Lake Shore, who entered the game with a 13-1 record, led by a goal going into halftime, but PYA came back in the second half and tied the game up in the final period, sending the game to OT, where Lake Shore was able to pick up the winning goal. Frank Ochoa scored twice for Penn Yan, Carter Earl had one goal and two assists, Teagan Fingar got one goal and one assist and Tukker Fisher scored once. Braden Fingar and Caden Dixon each added an assist. Will Thompson made 12 saves in goal for the Mustangs. Marcus Whitman 11, Seton Catholic 9 Whitman won by two over Seton in a non-leaguer, improving to 8-6. The first quarter was tied at two apiece, but Whitman edged ahead by one before halftime. In the second half, MW increased their advantage by another goal in the third quarter and both teams tallied two goals in the fourth, keeping the Wildcats in the lead for the win. Connor Gorton led Marcus Whitman with four goals and two assists; Brody Royston, Tariku Blueye and Rylan Weissinger each scored two goals, with Weissinger adding two assists and Royston adding one. Blake Dunton made 16 saves for the Wildcats. The loss put Seton at 10-5 for the season. Girls Lacrosse May 9 Penn Yan 16, Wayne 2 Penn Yan Academy put the big hurt on the Wayne Eagles, moving up to 11-2 with the win. PYA took a wide lead from the start, going into the half with a 12-0 lead. The second half of play was much closer, with Wayne able to put up two goals to Penn Yan’s four, but the Mustangs’ dominant performance was too much for the Eagles to stand against. Bailey Cooper led Penn Yan, adding another six goals to her career and picking up an assist. Also for PYA, Corinne Barden had two goals and four assists and Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger got one goal and two assists. Marion Wheeler made seven saves for Penn Yan. Wayne’s goals were scored by Abby Brown and Isabella Veltre, while goalie Mimi Ugalde made six saves. May 10 Mercy 13, Penn Yan 10 Mercy handed the Mustangs just their third loss of the season, though Penn Yan remained undefeated in their league. Mercy was 7-5 with the win. Mercy took the lead before the half, outscoring PYA 7-4. Both teams were neck and neck in the second half, each scoring six goals, but Penn Yan was unable to battle back to a tying goal, giving the win to Mercy. Madeleine Fitzgerald was the top scorer for Mercy with four goals and an assist, while Mia Lusardi had two goals and four assists. For Penn Yan, Bailey Cooper had five goals, Corinne Barden had three goals and an assist, and Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger and Gianna Voigt each scored a goal. Mercy got one save from Natalie Casale and four from Katherine Longuil, while Marion Wheeler made six for the Mustangs. Waterloo/Marcus Whitman 17, Gananda-Marion 3 The Tigers took a big win over GM, grabbing their third V in a row and moving up to 8-4. Gananda-Marion was 1-13 with the loss. WMW offered Gananda-Marion no chance, scoring an eight point advantage in the first half and a six point advantage in the second. For Waterloo/Whitman, Lainie Forde had four goals and an assist, Natalie DiSanto had three goals and three assists, Alex DiSanto had three goals and one assist, and Maci Mueller and Addison Bree each had two goals and an assist. May 12 Waterloo/Marcus Whitman 12, Newark/Midlakes 2 WMW won by 10 over Newark/Midlakes, improving to 5-2 in the Finger Lakes. The Tigers put up eight unanswered goals before halftime and another four in the second half, though NM was able to put up a couple points to save themselves from the shutout. Top shooters for Waterloo/Whitman included Lainie Forde with four goals and an assist, Natalie DiSanto with three goals and an assist, and Maci Mueller with two goals and five assists. Madycyn Hurdle made seven saves for WMW in the game.
