Rob Maeske The Chronicle-Express Boys Lacrosse May 16 Penn Yan 6, Clarence 0 The Mustangs shut out Clarence, a Class B team from Erie Country, in a crossover matchup that saw PYA improve to 7-7. Penn Yan scored five unanswered goals before halftime. While the third quarter saw no score from either team, the Mustangs tacked on another one in the fourth and never let a single Clarence ball find the net. Caden Dixon scored two goals for PYA; Carter Earl and Teagan Fingar each had a goal and two assists; Tukker Fisher and Frank Ochoa each had one goal and one assist. Will Thompson made three saves for Penn Yan and Aidan Griffiths came in for the last two minutes and made one. Pal-Mac 10, Marcus Whitman 3 Palmyra-Macedon took the win over Whitman, dropping the Wildcats to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the league. With the win, the Red Raiders were 12-3 overall and 8-1 in the league, sitting just behind Wayne in the Finger Lakes standings. Mike Halsey led the Raiders with four goals and three assists; Keagan Hoesterey had three goals and one assist. Whitman’s goals were scored by Brody Royston, Logan Storms and Rylan Weissinger, with Royston also getting an assist. In goal, Peyton Lich made 10 saves for Pal-Mac, while Blake Dunton made 20 for Marcus Whitman. May 18 Penn Yan 14, Livonia-Avon 2 Penn Yan took a dominant win, moving up to 8-7. Braden Fingar and Carter Earl led the Mustangs with three goals each; Fingar also got an assist. Frank Ochoa, John Holly and Bryant Van Housen each scored two goals, with Van Housen getting an assist. Max McEnerney and Jackson McEnerney scored for LA. In the Mustangs’ goal, Will Thompson made three and allowed one and Aiden Griffiths made one and allowed one. Marcus Whitman 16, Batavia-Notre Dame 1 Whitman destroyed B-ND for the Wildcats’ last game of the regular season. Whitman finished with a 9-7 record. Whitman had 12 unanswered goals in the first half. Connor Gorton led MW with three goals and four assists. Blake Dunton made five saves for the Wildcats. B-ND’s goal was scored by Quintin Cummings, while goaltender Branden Flanagan made seven saves. May 20 Penn Yan 13, Williamson North 2 PYA finished out the regular season with a big win over Williamson North, ending the Spring at 9-7. Penn Yan started the game out with six unanswered goals in the first quarter. Braden Fingar was the top scorer for PYA with five goals and two assists. Bryant Van Housen, Teagan Fingar and Caden Dixon scored two apiece, with Van Housen and Fingar also getting assists. Will Thompson made seven saves for Penn Yan and allowed both of WN’s goals; Aiden Griffiths made one save in the four minutes he spent in the net. Penn Yan’s first Sectional game was scheduled for May 24; we’ll have those results in our next issue. Girls Lacrosse May 15 Penfield 13, Penn Yan 8 PYA lost a crossover game to Penfield, dropping to 11-4. For Penn Yan, Bailey Cooper scored four goals; Taylor Mullins got two goals and two assists; Maihue Miranda-Wiltberger and Gianna Voigt scored one apiece. PY goalie Marion Wheeler made four saves. Pal-Mac 10, Waterloo-Marcus Whitman 6 WMW fell to 9-5 with a loss to Pal-Mac. For Pal-Mac, Reagan Diehl had four goals; Faith Beals made nine saves. For Waterloo-Whitman, Natalie DiSanto scored three, Maci Mueller scored two and Alex DiSanto scored one; Hurdle made nine saves. May 17 Penn Yan 8, Pal-Mac 5 The Mustangs beat Pal-Mac to finish the regular season and secure the Finger Lakes League title. PYA finished the season at 12-4 overall and an undefeated 8-0 in the FLL. Pal-Mac finished second in the league, also at 12-4 overall, but 6-1 in the Finger Lakes. Corinne Barden led the Mustangs with three goals and an assist, Bailey Cooper had two goals and an assist and Taylor Mullins had one of each. Marion Wheeler made four saves for Penn Yan. Reagan Diehl scored two goals for Palmyra-Macedon and Faith Beals made three saves. Penn Yan’s first Sectional match was scheduled for May 24 against Gananda-Marion. May 18 Waterloo-Marcus Whitman 16, Greece Storm 11 Waterloo-Whitman went to 10-5 with a crossover win vs. Greece Storm. Natalie DiSanto and Lainie Forde each scored five goals for the Tigers; DiSanta also had three assists. Maci Mueller got four goals and three assists. Madycyn Hurdle made three saves. WMW faces Mynderse-Romulus in the first round of Sectionals. Baseball May 15 Pal-Mac 12, Penn Yan 2 (8 innings) Penn Yan Academy took a tough loss to Pal-Mac in the top of the extra inning. After seven, the score was tied 2-2, but an overtime shift in personnel saw PYA struggling as the Raiders began racking up runs. Winning pitcher Ian Goodness struck out 13 and allowed four hits, also going 3-4 at the plate with two doubles, three runs and an RBI. Penn Yan’s Brady Emerson pitched seven innings, netting 12 strikeouts and allowing four hits. It was Emerson’s career best outing. In the extra inning, Reed Bouchard pitched two Ks and allowed one hit before freshman Spencer Jensen came in and got a strikeout. Riley Griffiths, Brady Bouchard, Owen Bishop and Mike Layton got PYA’s hits, with Bouchard nailing a homer for two RBI. The loss put Penn Yan at 6-6 in the Finger Lakes. It was Pal-Mac’s 13th-straight win. Gananda 5, Naples 2 Naples was 11-6 with a loss to Gananda. May 16 Penn Yan 6, Mynderse 1 The Mustangs snapped a three loss streak with a win over Mynderse, improving to 7-6 in the league. Brady Bouchard pitched a complete game for Penn Yan, fanning 19 and allowing two hits and one unearned run. For the season, Bouchard has had eight appearances, logging 48 innings, 109 Ks, nine walks and allowing a total 20 hits. Batting for PYA, Liam Chapman went 1-2 with two runs, Brady and Reed Bouchard each went 1-3 with a run, Gio D’Amico got a hit and Gavin Weston went 1-1 with an RBI. Wayland-Cohocton 16, Naples 0 Way-Co absolutely dominated Naples, putting up a 16-run shutout against the Big Green Machines. May 17 Wayne 11, Penn Yan 1 Penn Yan ended the regular season with a big loss to Wayne, finishing out at 8-11 overall and 7-7 in the Finger Lakes League. PYA’s one run came in the top of the sixth, but five more from Wayne ended the game early. Wayne’s top slugger was Tyler Mudge, who went 3-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Penn Yan’s first Sectional game was set as a battle of the Mustangs, with PYA facing Dansville. Avoca-Prattsburgh 12, Dundee/Bradford 3 Dundee/Bradford took their fourth loss in a row, dropping by 9 to AP. For DB, Gabe Stiles got a double and two runs, Aiden Monell had three singles and Alex Goltry had an RBI and a run. Naples 18, Clyde-Savannah 8 Naples snapped a threeloss streak with a win over Clyde-Savannah, moving up to 12-7. Adam Bay went 4-4 at the plate, getting a home run and a double for four runs and six RBI. Naples logged 21 total hits in the game. Top batters besides Bay were Cade Rathburn with four RBI on two hits, Drew Reigelsperger with three runs and an RBI on a 3-4 day, and Charlie Grove, who went 3-4 with a double for two RBI and three runs. May 18 Dundee/Bradford 10, Harley-Allendale-Columbia 8 DB defeated HAC, ending their regular season at 6-8 overall and 5-6 in the league. Jeremy Stiles pitched four innings and change, striking out four, while Gabe Stiles came in for the end of the game, striking out three. In BraveScot batting, Ian Gleason had two hits, while Gabe Stiles, Aiden Monell, Eli Raplee, Chris Clancy and Nathan Kiskaden each got a hit. Dansville 8, Naples 5 (8 innings) Naples lost their last game of the regular season to Dansville, entering Sectionals with a 12-8 record overall. Naples had the lead after six innings, but Dansville tied it up with a run in the seventh, sending the game to extra innings, where the Mustangs took the win. For Naples, Drew Reigelsperger went 3-4 with an RBI. Naples first game of Sectionals was set for the 22nd against Genesee Valley-Belfast. Sectionals May 21 (#7) York 2, (#10) Dundee/ Bradford 0 Dundee/Bradford got knocked out of Sectionals early, losing in the first round of the Class C2 bracket to York. Jake Pangrazio pitched a complete game for York, fanning 19 batters. Dundee/Bradford ended their season with a total record of 7-8. Softball May 15 Penn Yan 11, Pal-Mac 0 Penn Yan shutout Pal-Mac, moving up to 9-7. Winning pitcher Giana Ficcaglia had 15 strikeouts and got two triples at the plate. Also for the Mustangs, Maddie Breuer, Leah Prather and Hailey Trank each went 3-4, with Trank also getting a triple. Bloomfield 4, Dundee/ Bradford 3 Bloomfield got their sixth-straight win with a walkoff in the seventh against the BraveScots. Dundee/Bradford was 12-3 with the loss. Ashlyn Wright had 15 strikeouts for the Bombers and went 3-4 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. Addie Kendall, Kailey Yeoman, Mikayla Schoffner, Korrin Yeoman, and Madison Sutryk each had a hit for DB, with Korrin Yeoman also getting an RBI. Campbell-Savona 5, Naples 4 May 16 Penn Yan 5, Mynderse 1 Penn Yan Academy’s Giana Ficcaglia logged her 500th career strikeout in PY’s win against Mynderse. Ficcaglia had 10 Ks in the game. At the plate, Leah Prather went 4-4 with a double and Hailey Trank went 3-4. For Mynderse, Stephanie Mirras got two strikeouts and Kyah Lajewski doubled. Avoca-Prattsburgh 12, Naples 3 Naples ended their season with at 5-11 after a loss to Avoca-Prattsburgh. The Green entered Sectionals in Class D1 at the #9 seed, with their first opponent set as Fillmore (#9) on May 20. May 17 Penn Yan 3, Wayne 2 The Mustangs finished out the regular season with a close win over Wayne, moving up to 11-7 as they headed toward Sectionals. On the mound, Giana Ficcaglia had 11 strikeouts for Penn Yan. Batting for the Mustangs, Abby Fischer and Hailey Trank both went 2-3, with Trank hitting a triple and a double. Wayne’s Cameron Crawford got two strikeouts. Penn Yan’s first Sectional game was set for Monday, the 22nd against Attica. Dundee/Bradford 4, Avoca-Prattsburgh 3 (8 innings) The BraveScots ended the season with a narrow win against AP. DB’s Makayla Schoffner got the winning hit, going 1-3 on the day and getting an RBI and a run scored. Also for the ‘Scots, Mykenzie Clancy went 2-3 with two RBI and a run and Adalyn Tham got a hit. Moving on to Sectionals, Dundee/Bradford entered the Class C2 tourney with the #3 seed. Their first Sectional game was against Clyde-Savannah (#14). Sectionals May 19 Class C2 (#3) Dundee/Bradford 17, (#14) Clyde-Savannah 0 (5 innings) The BraveScots destroyed Clyde-Savannah in the first round of Sectionals, shutting out their opponents in five innings. The ‘Scots put Clyde-Savannah in a tough spot early in the game, racking up 11 runs in the first inning alone. Addie Kendall pitched a complete game for Dundee/Bradford, striking out 12 and allowing just one hit in the game. Makayla Schoffner was the top slugger for the BraveScots, going 3-3 with a double for two RBI. Also for DB, Madalyn Knapp went 2-3 with an RBI and a run. Dundee/Bradford’s next opponent in Sectionals was (#6) Pavilion. May 20 Class D1 (#8) Fillmore13, (#9) Naples 4 Naples was out early after a loss to Fillmore, finalizing the Big Green’s record at 5-12. Boys Tennis May 8 Penn Yan 5, Newark 0 Penn Yan Academy improved to 8-2 with a shutout win over Newark. In singles, Landon Spears beat Cole Talbot, Kyle Wheeler beat Andrew Flock and Joe Droney beat Ben Winkler. In doubles, it was Nathaniel Chaffee and Carson Nagpaul over Jacob George and Ian Murphy in the first game and Carter Hanley and Aidan Dallos over Cam Baker and Douglas Wells in the second. Honeoye 5, Marcus Whitman 0 Whitman sustained their fifth loss in a row with a shutout to Honeoye, still unable to secure a win this season. Naples 5, Midlakes 0 Naples shutout Midlakes, taking all five match points and moving up to 7-1. Dean Rischpater and Jacob Betrus won singles for Naples, while Landon Gleichauf/ Matthew Lincoln and Ian Kenney/ Colin Kenney won doubles. May 9 Wayne 5, Penn Yan 0 PYA got skunked by Wayne, picking up their third loss of the season. Evan Phillips, Aiden Desens and Cameron Blankenburg won singles for Wayne. In doubles, it was Clark/ Wilson over Nagpaul/Barden and Schichtel/Habecker over Chaffee/ Reid. Newark 4, Marcus Whitman 1 A loss to the Reds dropped Marcus Whitman to 0-6 for the season. Naples 4, Mynderse 1 Naples beat Mynderse, moving up to 8-1. In singles, Matt Lincoln beat Luke Olschewske, Landon Gleichauf beat Vincent Lux and Dean Rischpater beat Kyle Adams. Mynderse’s Noah Smith and Liam Tanner won first doubles over Jacob Betrus and Ian Kenney, while Eliza Almekinder and Colin Kenney won second doubles for Naples over Avinash and Devon James. May 10 Penn Yan 4, Avoca-Prattsburgh 1 The Mustangs won at home AP in a non-league match, improving to 9-3. AP’s Elias Putnam took first singles over Landon Spears. Kyle Wheeler and David Reid took second and third singles, respectively, for Penn Yan. In first doubles, Carson Nagpaul and Tommy Barden won over Jackson Oliver and Bryce Schuck. In second doubles, Nathaniel Chaffee and Carter Hanley won over Tyler Nichols and Gavin Mills. The win put PYA at 5-3 in their league. May 11 Naples 5, Avoca-Prattsburgh 0 AP got shut out by the Big Green, moving Naples up to 9-1. Lincoln, Gleichauf and Rischpater won their singles for Naples. In doubles, Ian and Colin Kenney won over Jackson Oliver and Bryce Schuck and Jacob Betrus and Eliza Almekinder won over Tyler Nichols and Gavin Mills. May 13 Individual Sectionals Class B1 Singles Penn Yan Academy’s Joe Droney got a bye in the first round, falling to Preston Yates of Honeoye Falls-Lima in round two. Yates lost to Geneva’s Drew Fishback in the quarterfinals. PYA’s David Reid beat Batavia’s Andrew Beal in round one and Luke Olschewske of Mynderse in round two. In the quarterfinals, Reid beat Geneva’s Emmett Crawley, moving on to face Fishback in the semifinals. Fishback got the win over Reid and faced Wayne’s Evan Phillips in the finals, with Fishback taking the win. Reid faced North-Rose Wolcott’s Evan Loperfido in the C/D playback finals, losing 10-6. Class B1 Doubles PYA’s Landon Spears and Kyle Wheeler got a bye in round one and faced Midlakes’ Warrington and Chimera in round two, taking the win 10-5. Spears and Wheeler then defeated Wayne’s Schichtel and Habecker in the quarterfinals, moving on to face Charlie Roberts and Gavin Woolston of Livonia in the semifinals, where Spears and Wheeler fell 10-3. Roberts and Woolston advanced to win the tournament against Levi Woolston and Mary Kwak, also of Livonia. Penn Yan’s Carson Nagpaul and Tommy Barden faced Seth and Carter Brown of Haverling in the first round, winning 10-5 and then beating Jack Pickard and Orion Lama of Batavia in round 2, before falling to Livonia’s Woolston and Kwak. In the C/D playbacks, Nagpaul and Barden fell to Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Aiden Mclean and Alex Heywood. Mclean and Heywood then fell to Spears and Wheeler, giving PYA’s Spears and Wheeler the fourth place finish for the tournament. Class B2 Singles Marcus Whitman’s Emmitt Woodworth was defeated in the first round by Xander Mapstone of Bloomfield. Eli Bassett beat Attica’s Ruby Baratta in round one, but fell to Milo Warner of East Rochester in round two. Le Roy’s Owen Williams won the B2 Singles tourney. Class B2 Doubles Whitman’s Damien Atkinson and Casey Brown got a bye in round one, falling to Katelynn Everett and Aidan Soggs of Le Roy in round two. Also from Whitman, James Santonastaso and Parker Curtis fell to Attica’s Kathryn Metzger and Cassidy Shafer in the first round. Austin Lattuca and Dom Patti of Avon won the B2 Doubles tournament. Class B4 Singles Naples’ Dean Rischpater beat Pavilion’s Philip Kramer in round one, before falling to Terrance Bayly-Henshaw of Wheatland-Chili in round two. Jacob Betrus skunked Houghton Academy’s Sam Winkens in round one, but fell to Wheatland-Chili’s Ethan Hallock in round two. Hallock progressed through the tourney to face Elias Putnam of Avoca-Prattsburgh in the finals, with Putnam winning 10-8 to take the B4 Singles title. Class B4 Doubles Naples’ Landon Gleichauf and Matthew Lincoln got a bye in the first round, winning 10-0 against Genesee Valley’s Spencer Rambaran and Liliana Porter in round two. Lincoln and Gleichauf moved on to defeat Honeoye’s Cody Vandewark and Owen Baader in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Gleichauf and Lincoln defeated Avoca-Prattsburgh’s Bryce Schuck and Jackson Oliver, before facing and defeating Fillmore Central’s Joe Derck and Jack Boon to take the B4 title for Naples. Also from Naples, Colin and Ian Kenney bypassed round one to take on Alfred-Almond’s Julian Petrillo and Lucian Fioretto, winning 10-0. The Kenneys then beat Honeoye’s Tre Nguyen and Ajay Merrick in the quarterfinals before falling to Derck and Boon in the semis. Colin and Ian Kenney then faced Pavilion’s Nevan Good and Bradley Gurbacki in the A/B playback finals, taking the win and third place in the tourney overall. May 15 Penn Yan 5, Marcus Whitman 0 The Mustangs skunked Whitman, moving up to 10-3 this season. Kyle Wheeler and Tommy Barden won first and second singles, respectively, while Nathaniel Chaffee took third singles on a forfeit. In doubles, Carson Nagpaul and Joe Droney won first doubles for PYA and second doubles was won by Collin Reagan and David Reid. With the loss, Whitman ended the regular season with an 0-7 record. Whitman’s first matchup in the Class B2 Team Sectional tournament was May 22 against Williamson. It was Senior Night for Penn Yan. PY’s seniors this year are Tommy Barden, Conor Clancy, Joe Droney, Carson Nagpaul, Collin Reagan and Kyle Wheeler. May 16 Penn Yan 4, Pal-Mac 1 Penn Yan Academy finished out the regular season with a win over Pal-Mac, bringing their record to 11-3. Pal-Mac’s Avery Fedor took first singles over Landon Spears, but Kyle Wheeler and Joe Droney won the second and third games. In doubles, Nagpaul and Barden beat Henley and Mastowski and Chaffee and Reid beat Pelton and Galens. With the regular season over, PY headed to Class B1 Team Sectionals. Earning a bye in the first round with #3 seed, their first match was May 23 versus the winner of (#6) North Rose-Wolcott and (#11) Hornell. May 17 Naples 4, Geneva 1 Naples took the win over Geneva, ending the regular season with a 10-1 record. Geneva’s Drew Fishback, who narrowly missed the B1 Individuals title, defeated Matthew Lincoln in first singles. Naples’ Landon Gleichauf and Dean Rischpater won second and third singles, respectively. For doubles, Ian and Colin Kenney took the first game and Jacob Betrus and Eliza Almekinder took the second. Naples headed into Team Sectionals with Class B4’s #2 seed, giving them a bye in the first round. Naples first Team Sectionals match will be on the 23rd against the winner of (#7) Avoca-Prattsburgh and (#10) Pavilion. Boys Track & Field May 12 South Seneca Invitational at South Seneca HS For Penn Yan, JD Tette won the 1600m (4:27.82) and the 3200m (9:50.50); Anthony Wheeler took second in the 800m (2:07.56) and fourth in the 400m (55.22); Tony Sciallo won the Discus (133-11) and took second in the Shot Put (38-10). Penn Yan finished third overall. For Dundee/Bradford, Logan Buchanan took second in the High Jump (6-02) and fifth in the Long Jump (18-10.25); Hayden Erick took second in the Long Jump (19-11) and second in the Triple Jump (41-00.25); Cam Buchanan took fourth in the 100m (11.65); Curtis Logan took sixth in the 400m (56.07); Cam Rosemier took third in the Pentathlon (2086 pts.); DB took second in the 100m Relay 46.26) and fifth in the 400m Relay (3:59.30). DM finished fifth overall. For Marcus Whitman, Brendan Laity took second in the 3000m Steeplechase (10:55.72) with Fletcher Dickmann taking third (12:00.39); Desmond Hill took fourth in the 3200m (11:03.36) and fifth in the 1600m (5:02.44); Dylan O’Connor took fifth in the 400m Hurdles (1:05.04); Connor Rinas took second in the Discus (119-08) and fifth in the Shot Put (36-00.75); Whitman took second in the 800m Relay (9:23.36). Whitman finished eighth overall. May 15 Wayne-Finger Lakes Division I Championships For Penn Yan, JD Tette won the 1600m (4:45.04), won the 3200m (10:24.05) and took 5th in the 800m (2:12.22); Anthony Wheeler took 2nd in the 800m (2:06.38), 2nd in the 1600m (4:51.79) and 5th in the 400m (54.48); Tony Sciallo took 4th in the Shot Put (38-05.75); Penn Yan took 2nd in the 800m Relay. Penn Yan finished 5th overall with 59 points. For Marcus Whitman, Daniel Nemitz won the Pole Vault (1006); Connor Rinas took 2nd in the Discus (121-07); Brendan Laity took 4th in the 3200m (10:53.80) and 6th in the 1600m (4:56.99); Dylan O’Connor took 5th in the 400m Hurdles (1:05.89). Whitman finished 7th overall with 51 points. Wayne-Finger Lakes Division II Championships Dundee/Bradford’s Hayden Erick won the Long Jump (2100.75) and Triple Jump (41-09.75) and took second in the High Jump (6-00); Logan Buchanan won the High Jump (6-04) and took 3rd in the Long Jump (20-01) with Ryan McTamney in 4th; Ian Pavlina took 6th in the 100m (12.11) and 200m (25.36); Dundee/Bradford took 3rd in the 100m Relay. Dundee/Bradford finished 6th overall with 67 points. May 19 Wayne-Finger Lakes League Championships For Penn Yan, JD Tette won the 1600m (4:36.45), the 3200m (9:51.27) and the 3000m Steeplechase (10:01.71); Tony Sciallo won the Discus (130-10) and took 4th in the Shot Put (3907.50); Penn Yan took 3rd in the 800m Relay. Penn Yan finished 5th overall with 51 points. Tette was named Most Outstanding Performer for Track. For Dundee/Bradford, Logan Buchanan won the High Jump (6-02); Hayden Erick took 4th in the Triple Jump (43-02); Camden Buchanan took 5th in the Shot Put (39-04.50); Dundee/Bradford took 5th in the 100m Relay. Dundee/ Bradford finished 12th overall with 28 points. For Marcus Whitman, Brendan Laity took 2nd in the Steeplechase (10:48.73) and 5th in the 3200m (10:55.78); Daniel Nemitz tied for 2nd in the Pole Vault (10-06); Fletcher Dickmann took 3rd in the 3200m (10:45.11) and 5th in the 1600m (4:54.58); Connor Rinas took 5th in the Discus (113-00); Cam Rosemier took 5th in the Pentathlon; Whitman took 4th in the 800m Relay. Whitman finished 6th overall with 42 points. Girls Track & Field May 12 South Seneca Invitational at South Seneca HS For Penn Yan, Jenna Reynolds took second in the 3000m (12:26.86) and sixth in the 1500m (5:56.18). Penn Yan finished 14th of 15 schools.
