John M. Murphy, 93, beloved father of Mary Ellen Smolos, Penn Yan, and Marcia Murphy, Long Branch, N.J. and grandfather of Jennifer Smolos, Jersey City, N.J. passed away November 19, 2013 in the home of his birth.

Family and friends called from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 at St. Michael's Church in Penn Yan with burial to follow at St. Michael's Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in John's name to the Benton Fire Department, St. Michael's School, and Catholic Charities.

Mr. Murphy was born July 14, 1920 in the family farmhouse, the son of the late Thomas E. and Mary H. (Murray) Murphy. John devoted his life to his land, family and faith. Mr. Murphy was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Virginia (Ribble) Murphy, brother Thomas Murphy, and sisters Margaret & Elizabeth Murphy. Following the footsteps of a farmer, Mr. Murphy will be remembered by his family and all who knew him for his intuitive sense of honesty, fairness and acceptance.

The family of Mr. Murphy would like to extend a special thank you to all those who cared for John over the past five years, whose assistance contributed to his joy of living in the family homestead watching over the land that molded him into the man he was.
