On Sunday morning, June 8, more than 850 athletes will swim, bike and run in the Strassburg Sock Keuka Lake Triathlon presented by Towpath Bike. The triathlon, now in its 10th year, attracts athletes from as far as Canada, New England and beyond. The event is held at Keuka College with swimmers going off the Point and bikers and runners transitioning on the lawn next to Norton Chapel.
As a local partner for the event, the Arts Center of Yates County is responsible for recruiting 100 volunteers to help with Saturday afternoon registration and a variety of jobs on Sunday morning, ranging from body marking to directing athletes on the race course to handing out water or clipping off race trackers. The Arts Center is compensated for every volunteer we bring in for this event - and the Arts Center Board has voted to donate that money to the Yates Community Endowment's Disaster Relief Fund, so participation as a volunteer for this event will help with storm relief efforts!
Anyone interested in volunteering should report to the volunteer tent (located between the Chapel and the transition area) by 6:30 a.m. Sunday to sign in, get a volunteer t-shirt, assignment and lunch ticket with time to get out to their assigned place by the start of the race at 7:30 a.m. (Jobs are given on a first come, first served basis, so if you want the widest choice come early. Volunteers are free to eat and leave once their job is finished, so those reporting extra early for registration and body marking can usually plan on being finished when the race starts.)
Volunteers must sign in at the volunteer tent for us to receive credit for your participation. The race goes on rain or shine, so plan to bring rain gear and a chair if standing for several hours may become too tiring. “It is a fun event and we hope you'll come out to support the athletes, the Arts Center and our community!” says Arts Center Director Kris Pearson.
The triathlon runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 8. Those traveling through the area around Keuka College and East Bluff Road should expect delays during the race hours.
Everyone is welcome to participate. Anyone with questions can contact the Arts Center at 315-536-8226.
