Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike reports that his office’s participation with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in the prescription drug  “Take-Back” event  was successful. Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. April 30, officers received over 200 lbs. of prescription meds from 85 people, filling five large boxes. Additionally, drugs deposited in receptacles at the Public Safety Building in Penn Yan and Starkey Town Hall  in Dundee over six months filled six boxes weighing over 300 lbs. All 500 plus lbs. of drugs were taken by a DEA agent to Buffalo for appropriate destruction.

“I thank our community for the great response to take-back drugs as our goal to prevent increased pill abuse, misuse and theft, while addressing vital issues of public safety, public health, and looking out for the environment,” said Spike.

Take back receptacles remain available at the public safety building and at the Starkey town hall daily.
