Robert J. Stillwell, 82, passed away at his home early Sunday, July 24, 2016 while under the care of his loving wife and daughter.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Penn Yan. Burial will follow in the Lakeview Cemetery. Calling hours were held from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan and will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral.

He was born Sept. 8, 1933 at Faxton Hospital in Utica, to John W. and Bessie M. Inman Stillwell.

He graduated from New Hartford Central School in 1953, where he played varsity football and was given the nickname “The General.” After graduation, he went to work on the family farm with his parents. After his father’s death in 1963, Bob took over operation of the farm and faithfully worked the land until he sold the farm in 1986. He married Arlene Marie Christensen on April 18, 1964 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica. After selling the farm, he worked at the New Hartford Central School as a bus driver then Custodian until his retirement in 2004.

During his life, he was a member of the Herkimer County Farm Bureau, Frankfort Town Republican Committee, Boy Scouts of America Leader, longtime member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Utica, and was currently a member at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. His greatest honor was being a charter member of the Frankfort Hill Volunteer Fire Company. He was active for 62 years, serving as Assistant Fire Chief from 1955–1977. He was the last surviving charter member. He enjoyed his membership and friends of the International Harvester Club of Bellona. Most of all he loved spending time with family and friends, NASCAR Racing and going out to dinner.

He is survived by his wife, his two children, Karen (Brian) Fitzpatrick, of Penn Yan with whom he and Arlene resided, and Robert Jr., of Morristown, N.J. He has four  grandchildren, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kirsten (Dave Salone) Fitzpatrick, of Penn Yan, Taylor and Jordan Stillwell of Morristown, N.J.; and a great-grandson, Lucas Alexander Salone. Bob is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marjorie Christensen, of Saratoga Springs; several nieces, nephews (especially Chiquita (Stan) Lebiednik, of New Hartford); and cousins (especially Zelma Dawes, of New Hartford).

He is predeceased by a sister, Margaret, in infancy; a brother, Emmett; and a half-brother, William.
