Shirley R. Lynch of New Orleans, La., formerly of Brighton and Penn Yan, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017, at Ochsner Hospital.

Per her wishes, there will not be a memorial service, just a burial service at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., where she will be buried next to her husband.

Shirley Lynch is the daughter of the late Waldo (Walter) Reed and Freda Hagen Reed, sister to the late Louemma R. French, and the niece to golfer Walter Hagen.

She was a resident of Metairie, La. for the past 42 years. She was a graduate of Penn Yan High School in 1951 and the University of New Orleans in 1992 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. She was a member of the Jefferson Parish Genealogy Club and a member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).

Shirley was a woman of diverse interests and hobbies from travel to historical and biographical literature, to classic movies, and then genealogy in her later years. She loved to take her kids and grandkids on trips throughout the United States. She enjoyed sharing and telling greatly detailed stories.

She was preceded in death by her husband CMSgt. John M Lynch, Jr., (Ret).

She is the mother of Dennis T. Lynch (Barbara), Bruce M. Lynch, and Kathleen L. Sommers (Ira). Shirley is grandmother to Courtney Gwin (Gregg Maucele), Travis Gwin (Sharon), Kelley Nunez (Kevin), and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Sheila Thompson-Flores and Patricia Reiss, with one nephew and six nieces.
