The William G. Pomeroy Foundation has partnered with the New York Folklore Society to promote cultural tourism and commemorate legends and folklore as part of New York State history.

Legends are sometimes referred to as “folk history.” They are reports and stories that explain an unusual event, a unique person, or warn others as in a cautionary tale. Passed from person to person over time, there is often historical truth at the heart of every legend. The details, however, are often altered through oral communication.

Grant funds for a Legends & Lore marker cover the entire cost of the marker, pole and shipping.  Recipients are responsible for installation.   Grants are available to 501(c)(3) organizations and municipalities within New York State.  The deadline to apply is Oct. 31
