With the local high school basketball regular season completed, all attention now shifts to the upcoming Section V Basketball Tournament. Friday morning at Pittsford’s Burgundy Basin Inn, the brackets pairings and seeding for the tournament games were made public. Also Section V announced their selections for their “Coach of the Year” for each classification. And it was a memorable morning for Penn Yan’s Marty Gibson.

Coach Gibson was named the Section V, Class B “Coach of the Year” for the 2017-18 season. He has guided his Mustang team to a highly successful 15-5 record this season and have earned the #2 seed in the Class B bracket. The Penn Yan cagers also battled all season in the tough Finger Lakes East League. They finished in third place behind Mynderse and Wayne in the FL East. They will be battling the #1 seed Mynderse Blue Devils for the Section V Class B title.

Coach Gibson took over the coaching reins in Penn Yan 4 years ago. He has been coaching high school basketball for nearly 30 years. He started his coaching career in Dundee. The Mustang basketball program has developed into one of the top high school basketball programs in Section V under the guidance of Marty Gibson. And now his hard work and dedication has been recognized by the entire Section.

The Section V “Coach of the Year” award is sponsored by Coca Cola, Pinnacle sports, and Penn Yan’s own Birkett Mills. The Mustangs will kick off their Section V tournament run at home Wednesday night. The #2 seed Mustangs will take on the #15 seed Greece Olympia team.

The honors for Coach Gibson continued the next day at the Finger Lakes League meeting. Marty Gibson was named “Co-Coach of the Year” in the Finger Lakes East League. PalMac’s Pat Nolan shared this year’s honor.

It was also announced Coach Gibson will coach in this year’s prestigious Ronald McDonald All-star Game in March. This year’s game will be played Saturday, March 24th at Rush Henrietta High School.
