Swim areas at Red Jacket and Indian Pines parks in Penn Yan on Keuka Lake will re-open Wednesday, Aug. 22 if test results indicate there is no evidence of toxins from recent algal blooms. But because of a decrease in the number of lifeguards with some leaving for college, hours of swimming will be intermittent. Recreation & Facility Director Dan Doyle says hours for swimming areas will be posted at the parks.
The swim areas were closed Aug. 16 when a suspected harmful algal bloom was observed. Department of Health officials collected samples Aug. 20, and results were expected Aug. 21.
Doyle explains DOH does not collect samples until after the water clears, with the expectation that results will show no toxins, which was the result from the Aug. 3–7 event.
