Middle School effort raises $1,500 for Humane Society of Yates County
The students of Penn Yan Middle School waged a “Penny War” between their classes as a fundraiser for the Humane Society of Yates County recently. Each class gathered pennies in their bid to win, but any silver coins dropped in the opposing classes’ bin would count against that class’ total. The 7th and 8th graders did such a good job sabotaging each other, they ended up in negative numbers, allowing the 6th grade to sail to victory.
In all, the three classes raised $1,500, which the Student Council presented to an astonished Gayle Hurlbutt, President of the HSYC Board at a special assembly Friday, Dec. 21. Hurlbutt thanked the gathered classes, telling them their efforts would pay for 30 dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered, and would buy “a ton of food to feed them over the winter.”
