A house with a red door has several meanings, one of which signifies hospitality and a warm welcome. Some consider red to be lucky while others consider the home within to be a vibrant place full of life, energy and excitement.

All of the above are surely to be true as Yates County Habitat for Humanity welcomes you, the Yates Community, to open the red door and attend the open house and dedication from 2 to 4 p.m. June 23 of the recently completed house at 144 Seneca St. Penn Yan. This will now be home for Estella Garcia and her children, Abeni, Wilson, Lesly, and David. Estella, with the help of family and friends, has partnered this past year with the local affiliate volunteers while completing the required sweat equity hours for a single parent.

Estella and family are the 17th to become homeowners while partnering with Yates County Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and to making decent housing a matter of conscience and action. Habitat works in partnership with people in need through the world building simple, decent housing that is sold to them at no profit through no interest loans. Funds, building materials, and labor are donated by individuals, churches, corporations, and other organizations sharing the common goal.

Those attending the dedication will have a chance to meet the family and volunteers and tour the house following a short ceremony. Refreshments will be served.

Yates Habitat does not plan on being idle over the next month. Getting a jump on summer and Fathers Day, they hosted the famous chicken barbecue at the Oak Hill Bulk Foods June 15.

Yates County Habitat for Humanity meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Lyons Bank in Penn Yan beginning at 7 p.m. The next meeting is July 3.
