Yates County Deputy Seth Skelly and Naples Fire Dept. First Responder John Hebding were recognized by Yates County Sheriff Ronald Spike and the Yates County Legislature Aug. 12 for their recent lifesaving work.

According to Spike, the 911 dispatch center received a call at 7:33 p.m. June 29 from an Italy Valley location that a 2-year-old child had drowned. Deputy Skelly arrived in three minutes and found two females attempting revival. He administered CPR for nine minutes, getting a pulse and irregular heart beat. Hebding then arrived and continued the CPR as Skelly retrieved his CPR mask from his car and the two continued CPR until the Naples EMS ambulance arrived.

Rescuers reported a pulse at 7:49 p.m. The ambulance transported the child to a medical evacuation helicopter, which took the boy to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he is recovering in the Golisano Childrens unit.
