James E. Hillegus III, 21, of Wood St., Bath, was arrested March 9 by Penn Yan Police Department Officers (PYPD) on a warrant from Penn Yan Village Court after he failed to appear in court to answer charges of 7th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, 3rd degree aggravated unlicensed operation (AUO), inadequate tail lamps, and distorted or broken windshield. He was turned over to PYPD by Bath Police, and held at the Yates County Jail to await Centralized Arraignment Court.

David M. Raczynski, 78, of Italy Valley Road, Middlesex, was charged with driving with a suspended registration March 9 by PYPD. He will answer in village court.

Cory D. Scotchmer, 30, of Walnut Hill, Penn Yan, was charged with 2nd degree AUO, unlicensed operation, and obstructed driver’s view March 10 by PYPD. He will answer in village court.

Mykel V. Canales, 28, of Wall St., Auburn, was arrested on two warrants - one for 3rd degree bail jumping and one for petit larceny - after he failed to appear in Penn Yan Village Court on the larceny charge after being released on bail in 2013. He was turned over to PYPD by the Cayuga County Correctional Facility, and was held in the Yates County Jail to await arraignment court.

Daniel E. Stewart, 57, of East Elm St., Penn Yan, was charged with driving with a false inspection sticker March 10 by PYPD. He allegedly stole the sticker from his employer and affixed it to his vehicle. He will answer in village court.

Michael J. Mahunik, 32, West Lake Road, Penn Yan, was arrested March 11 by PYPD after he was found with marijuana at the Yates County Courthouse. He was charged with 2nd degree unlawful possession, processed at PYPD, then released with an appearance ticket for village Court.

Matthew J.T. Guilfoil, 29, originally of Marion but currently a homeless person of Penn Yan, was arrested March 11 by PYPD on a Superior Court warrant charging him with two counts of 5th degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and two counts of 5th degree criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 5th degree. He is accused of selling suboxone to an agent of PYPD on two separate dates in 2019. Guilfoil was held at the county jail and arraigned in County Court the next day. He was released, despite having two prior felony convictions, due to the current charges not being eligible for bail. 

A chimney fire in a pole barn was reported to 911 at 10:59 a.m. March 12 at the farm of Paul Hoover, 48, on Sutherland Road in Barrington. Dundee and Himrod Fire Depts., Penn Yan Ambulance Corps, Yates County Emergency Management, and YCSO responded to find light smoke and extinguished the fire which had extended into a wall. No injuries occurred.

Carla J. Simonton, 59, of Martin Road, Naples, was arrested March 13 at Potter Town Court by YCSO after being called to secure her for violation of probation. She was taken to the county jail and held without bail to reappear later.
