It should be noted that these reports merely indicate that someone has been charged with an offense, and the use of the term “arrest” does not always mean someone was put in jail. These reports do not indicate guilt.

Samantha N. Sprague, 25, of Dundee, was ticketed by Penn Yan Police after she was observed driving with a suspended driver’s license June 2. She was cited for 3rd degree aggravated unlicensed operation (AUO) and released with a ticket to appear in Penn Yan Village Court later.

A quonset type barn was destroyed by fire June 2 at 2191 Havens Corners Road in Benton. Owner Richard Harper, a Yates County Legislator and Benton Town Board Member, had finished mowing and returned his tractor to the barn, then went into his home. Approximately 10 minutes later, his son Drew discovered smoke and flames coming from the barn. They called 911 and moved vehicles away from the structure. Benton, Bellona, and Penn Yan Fire Depts. and Yates County Sheriff’s Deputies answered the call. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the mower, a larger tractor and other equipment materials were lost. The building will have to be replaced but was insured.

A large frame barn was completely destroyed by fire the night of June 2 at 386 Ridge Road in Benton. The family of tenant Martha Flores, 59, evacuated the nearby house but were uninjured. Bellona, Benton, Himrod, Dresden, Penn Yan, Branchport- Keuka Park, Gorham, and Hall Fire Depts. along with Yates County Sheriff’s Deputies, Penn Yan Police Department, and N.Y. State Police, all responded to the fire that was fully involved upon their arrival. Neighbors and firefighters rescued equipment from the fire, including dragging a hay baler out by hand. They were able to contain the fire to the one barn. neither the barn nor its contents, reported to be approximately $30,000 worth of stored hay, were insured. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is not connected to the earlier fire in Benton the same day.

Penn Yan Police arrested Katlin M. Wells, 21, of Penn Yan, after a traffic infraction. A license check revealed hers has been suspended since Nov. 2019 for failing to answer a summons out of Ontario County. Wells was issued an appearance ticket and released.

The Dundee Fire Dept. and Yates County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a tractor fire June 4 at 4421 Log City Road in Starkey, the property of John Gibson, 53, of Dundee. The fire was extinguished without incident, and the DEC was called for leaking diesel fuel and chemical pesticides.

Blake M. Randolph, 22, of Sunnyside Estates, Middlesex, was arrested June 4 by Yates County Sheriff’s Deputies upon his release from the Ontario County Jail, on a bench warrant from the Town of Italy for failure to appear in court. He was held at the Yates County Jail to await arraignment.

A motorcycle accident occurred June 5 on Lower West Lake Road in Jerusalem. Martin Ladd, 64, of Elam Lane, Rochester, lost control of his motorcycle and made contact with roadway. He sustained abrasions and was taken by Penn Yan Ambulance to Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital for treatment. While investigating the scene, Yates County Deputies detected an odor of an alcohol from another driver, James M. Clark. 61, of Rte. 54 Penn Yan. Failing field sobriety tests, Clark was taken to the county jail for a chemical test. he was charged with common law DWI and DWI with a .08% BAC or greater, and was released with appearance tickets for Jerusalem Town Court. 

Yates County Deputies responded to a vehicle complaint at 11:44 p.m. June 5 on Chubb Hollow Road in Milo where they found a vehicle parked in the south bound lane. A vehicle search revealed that Tristen Laws, 20, of Newark was in possession of marihuana. A search around the vehicle revealed that Seth Faeth, 20, of Newark, had disposed of two bags of marijuana in the grass ditch. Both were arrested for unlawful possession and released on appearance tickets to answer the charges in Milo Town Court.

William A Weller Jr. 38, of LeRoy, was charged with 3rd degree AUO by Penn Yan Police after being stopped for driving with a suspended license. He was released with an appearance ticket for village court.
