Doris May (Christensen) McFetridge, May to those who knew her, died peacefully at home December 31, 2017 at the age of 95, with loving family by her side.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Penn Yan at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5. All are welcome.
May’s life is the epitome of a life well lived and her spirit will stay with those of us who knew her as long as we all live.
Home and family meant everything to May. She married Robert in 1947 and had five children with him. Robert passed away in 1991, but until then she worked beside him, farming for many years and then as co-proprieter of Mac’s Dairy Bar until their retirement. May had an ice cream or milk shake at Mac’s as many days as she could manage each summer through the summer of 2017.
In retirement, May shopped, cooked, gardened and baked bread for her church, all activities she loved. May also held every grandbaby she could and mowed her own lawn until very recently. For her 75th birthday, her children helped her realize a lifelong dream to visit Denmark, the birthplace of her parents, Salome and Jens Christensen. Most especially, she looked forward to seeing all her children and grandchildren in her home where she lived independently until her diagnosis of cancer in 2016. Family and caregivers made it possible for her to remain home for the rest of her life. May led a quiet life, but lived it in such a graceful, giving and welcoming way, she was always caring for others until it was her time to be cared for.
May is survived by the children she loved, Gary and his wife, Carol; Greg and his life partner, Nancy; Sheryl Caldwell and her husband, Donald; Lance and his wife, Wendy; Scott and his wife, Lisa. She was “Gramma Mac” to her grandchildren, Brian, Bethany, Joe, Tammy, Amanda, Christopher, Sarah, Jennifer, Matthew, Patrick and Hannah. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Michael, Katherine, Sophia, Josh, Thalia, Sean, Carly, Emily, Caleb, Zoe and Riley. May was also sister to Carl, Luther, Clara and Janie, who all pre-deceased her and she was aunt to many nieces and nephews.
She was well cared for by her caregivers, Jennifer Lovejoy, Jennifer Updike, Brenda Buck, Erica Campbell, Sandy Corey, and Brandie Falcione. Many thanks go to her doctors and caregivers.
