Ellsworth L. Schoonover, 95, passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home.

Family and friends may call at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. The burial will be scheduled at a later date.

Ellsworth was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Mansfield, Pa., the son of Ralph & Edith (Keltz) Schoonover. He married Marie (Horton) Schoonover Jan. 3, 1942.

He was a veteran of the United States Army, who served in World War II, including service in California, Virginia, Wales, England, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg. He survived the Invasion of Normandy, received many honors, and he was honorably discharged in 1945.

Ellsworth prided himself on raising his six children with Marie, and he worked various jobs, including carpentry, truck driving, and driving bus for Dundee Central School District, before retiring to Florida. He was a founder of the Himrod Fire Department, served as Chief, helped to build the new location for the fire department, and he served as the Chlorinator for the Himrod Water System. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking, participating in church activities, playing the organ, and gardening.

Ellsworth is survived by five children; Philip (Connie) Schoonover, of The Villages, Fla.; Mary Perry of Penn Yan; Rose (Daniel) Woodard, of West Seneca; JoAnne (Bronlee) Combs of Flowery Branch, Ga.; Bette Smolos of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Marie, two brothers, one sister, and his son, Roger (Lori Wilson) Schoonover.
