Robert H. Young, 89, of Laurel, Del., peacefully passed away September 15, 2018, at his home, surrounded by loving family.

A mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Seaford, Del. at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21 .

Robert (Bob) was born in Burlington, Vt. and later moved with his family to the Finger Lakes Region in New York State. As a young man, he worked at the Elmwood Theater in Penn Yan, where he met his wife, Esther. After raising their four children, they moved to Laurel Del., a destination inspired by many family vacations to Delmarva.

Bob was a naval architect. He devoted many years to Penn Yan Boats, designing and building pleasure boats. After moving to Delaware, he worked as a surveyor for Littleton Surveyors in Laurel.

Bob was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Seaford, where he belonged to the Knights of Columbus, including one year as Grand Knight. He and his wife were involved in Marriage Encounter. He was always known by family, friends, and others as an exceptionally loving, giving, and caring person in his own quiet way. He demonstrated this through his role as a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts and his active participation in his church as a Eucharistic Minister. His interests were diverse, from model aircraft building to bird watching, gardening, and cooking. Bob was a skilled woodworker, a gifted tinkerer who could repair anything, a devotee of history and a lifelong learner.

Robert is survived by his wife of 70 years, Esther (Hart) Young and children, Michael Young and his wife, Sandy, Kathryn Croley, Patricia Young, and Steven Young; his brother, James Young and his wife, Joan, his sister, Ann O’Brien; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews who also survive him and will cherish his memory.

Memorial gifts may be made to Worldwide Marriage Encounter (, the Boy Scouts of America, Seneca Waterways Council (, the American Diabetes Association ( or to the charity of your choice in his name.

Arrangements are in the care of the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home in Laurel, Del.
