Mary C. Cook of Penn Yan passed away January 18, 2019 at F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.
Calling hours will be held at Weldon Funeral Home in Penn Yan from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22. A celebration mass of Mary’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23 at St. Michael’s Church, Penn Yan. Burial will be held at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
Mary was born in Binghamton Nov. 27, 1928. She attended Cortland State University, where she met and married Ambrose F. Cook Sr. Aug. 20, 1949.
She majored in early childhood education and had a special gift of connecting with everyone she knew. She touched the lives of countless children over the many years of her teaching career. She taught Kindergarten in the Penn Yan Central School District for 25 years and volunteered at Pooh’s Corners Preschool after her retirement.
Mary was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for over 50 years and was devoted to her Catholic community. She also volunteered for several local charities in the Penn Yan area after her retirement.
Mom enjoyed gardening, feeding her birds, reading and studying the Bible and visiting with anyone who came to her house. She would always welcome any visitor to her home with a smile and warm hug. She has been described as a strong, independent, always happy, kind- hearted and “feisty” woman. Her greatest love was being surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mom is survived by her four children, Ambrose F. Cook, Jr. (Sybil) Cary, N.C., Michael J. Cook, Clinton, Mary Anne (Richard) Gulvin, Middlesex, and Thomas R. Cook (Rhonda) Farmington.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ambrose Sr. in 1987.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Michael’s Church in Penn Yan, Clark Manor House, Canandaigua; F.F. Thompson Hospital, Canandaigua.
