As local high school sports enthusiasts prepare for the Oct. 7 induction of the Class of 2016 into the Penn Yan Athletic Hall of Fame, another group of hometown champions are preparing to be honored in another Hall of Fame.

Two New York State Champion Lacrosse teams will be inducted into the 2016 U.S. Lacrosse Greater Rochester Chapter Hall of Fame Nov. 4.

The teams being honored are the 2001 Varsity Boy’s team and the 1998 Varsity Girl’s team.

The dinner, sponsored by the U.S. Lacrosse Greater Rochester Chapter, will take place at the Burgundy Basin Inn, Pittsford.

Harry Queener, who coached the 2001 boy’s team, and Patty Queener, who coached the girl’s team, encourage players, family and friends to attend the special event. With a final record of 21-1, the 2001 Mustang boys defeated Gowanda and Skaneateles on their way to the state championship game against Manhasset.

Members of the Boy’s 2001 team, coached by Harry Queener with Assistant Brian Hobart, were: Seniors: Ken Mayville, Brice Queener, Dan Martin, Chris Hammond, Joe Supple, Ken Colf and Tony Palmisano: Juniors: Mike Vanaman, Brian Chappel, Matt Karweck, Chris Manley, Patrick Brennan, Keith Colf, Shawn McNeil, Nate Snyder, Matt Beckwith, Mark Beckwith, Carlo Dirisio, Blake Archer, and Sal Sciallo; Sophomores: Ryan Halbert, Brett Queener, Hans VanHouten, and Jim Coriale; Freshmen: Brendan Hamm, Derek Christensen, and Ben McMinn; Scorekeeper: Eileen Jensen; Manager: Josh Morehouse. Mike Vanaman was offensive MVP of the Championship. 

The 1998 Girls Varsity Lacrosse team, which was inducted into the Penn Yan Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015, boasted a perfect 24-0 record, defeating Garden City 13-6 in the championship game. A Penn Yan team and a Section V team, for the first time, was a New York State Champion.
