Penn Yan Cross Country runner Sona Dobronova has qualified for the New York State meet which will be held at Chenango Valley State Park Nov. 12 after finishing 6th in the Section V Championship meet Nov. 5. Coach Richard Smith says this is the second consecutive year that a Penn Yan girl has advanced to the state meet. Macy Nicholson competed at the state competition in 2015.

The Penn Yan Mustang and Marcus Whitman Wildcat Cross Country teams traveled to Wayne Central High School Saturday to compete in the Section V Championship meet. Both Penn Yan and Whitman teams were in the Class C classification.

In the girl’s competition, Penn Yan’s Dobronova was the Mustang’s best finisher. She came in 6th place with a time of 20:38.8. The Penn Yan team finished in 7th place with a 204 score. Finishing times for the Penn Yan Girls: Sona Dobronova (20:28), Katie Voak (22:39), Maci Nicholson (24:26), Lydia Anderson (26:22), Allyssa Johnson (26:32), Mary Ingram (26:58), and Alexis Condrey (28:13).

The Marcus Whitman girl’s team finished in 14th place with a 330 score. Waterloo won the Class C bracket with a 56 score.

On the boy’s side, Marcus Whitman finished in 2nd place in class C with a 65. Addison won the Class C with a 29. For the Wildcats, Gabe Stash finished in 2nd place with a time of 16:40.4. The Penn Yan Mustang boy’s team finished in 9th place out of 16 teams with a score of 240.
