The Marcus Whitman Wildcat wrestling team competed in two Christmas Dual Tournaments over the Christmas vacation break. The Wildcats picked up a tourney title Dec. 28 in Holley at the Holley/Wolcott Duals. Whitman was a perfect 5-0, defeating Albion, Holley/Wolcott, Addison, Eastridge, and Caledonia/Mumford. Justin Smith (99 lbs.), Kaitlin Wells (113 lbs.), Charlie Burgess (126 lbs.), Dylan Howell (138 lbs.), Andrew Norrison (145 lbs.), and Preston Smith (182 lbs.) all went undefeated for the day. Maxwell Gottshall (160 lbs.) and Jake Hill (195 lbs.) went 4-1. Dylan Howell was named the Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Marcus Whitman Christmas Tournament
The Marcus Whitman Wildcat wrestling team picked up their second tournament win in two days. The Wildcats went 5-0 Dec. 30 in Gorham to win the annual Marcus Whitman Christmas Tournament. Whitman scored wins over North Rose/Wolcott, Port Byron, Red Creek, Red Jacket, and Geneva to go 5-0 for the day. The Marcus Whitman Wildcats are now 22-2 on the season. Five Wildcat wrestlers went a perfect 5-0. Justin Smith (99 lbs.), Kaitlin Wells (113 lbs.), Andrew Norrison (145 lbs.), Preston Smith (182 lbs.), and Jake Hill (195 lbs.) finished the day undefeated. Kaitlin Wells was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the light weights.
Mynderse Academy defeated Dundee 48-36 on Wednesday morning in Seneca Falls. Individual results for this match was not available.
Bath/Haverling 47 Penn Yan 36
The Penn Yan Mustang girl’s basketball team dropped a 47-36 decision to Bath/Haverling in the championship game of the Bath Coaches vs. Cancer Christmas Basketball Tournament played in Bath on Wednesday, Dec. 30. Jadyn Abrams scored 20 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to pace the hometown Rams to the win.
Penn Yan 60 Owego 54
Penn Yan advanced to the tournament final game with a 60-54 win over Owego on Tuesday afternoon. Penn Yan’s Sydney Bloom and Lizzy Lafferty had big scoring efforts in this game to pace the Mustang offense. The loss dropped Penn Yan’s overall record to 4-2. They are a perfect 3-0 in Finger Lakes East League play. The Mustang girls will return to league play this week after the Christmas vacation break.
The Penn Yan Mustang and Marcus Whitman Wildcat bowling teams competed in the annual Newkirk Christmas Tournament at Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua Dec. 30. The Mustang girl’s team finished in fifth place with 1,837 total pins. Canandaigua finished in first place in the final girl’s standings.
The Marcus Whitman Wildcat girl’s team finished in 7th place.
On the boy’s side, the Mustang boy’s bowling team finished in second place with 2,577 total pins. Victor won the tournament with 2,836 total pins. Jacob Whitford was Penn Yan’s top bowler, rolling a 586 series, including a 232 game. The Marcus Whitman Wildcats came in third place with 2,542 pins. Penn Yan No. 2 finished in seventh place with 2,013 pins.
