The high school basketball season came to an abrupt end Feb. 24 for the three local high school boy's basketball teams. The Mustangs, Scotsmen, and Wildcat boy's hoopsters had hoped to advance in the Section V Basketball Tournament as they entered Friday's quarterfinal action.
Penn Yan, the No. 6 seed in the Class B bracket, traveled to Livonia to take on the defending Class B champion Bulldogs. In the Class C1 tournament, No. 2 seed Marcus Whitman entertained No. 7 Gananda, while No. 4 Dundee played host to No. 5 Lima Christian in the Class D1 tourney.
But the game plans did not work out for the locals. Livonia rallied in the final minute to edge Penn Yan 37-36. In Gorham, Marcus Whitman dropped a surprising 56-43 decision to Gananda. Lima Christian defeated Dundee 79-70 in Dundee. With the losses, the high school basketball season comes to an end in Yates County.
Livonia 37 Penn Yan 36
The Penn Yan Mustang boy's basketball team had hoped to defeat Livonia for the second time this season and advance to next week's semifinal round of the Section V Class B tournament. In a low scoring game played in Livonia Friday night, the Mustangs seemed to be on course to do just that. Penn Yan held a 4-point lead with under a minute to play. But the hometown Bulldogs rallied to score 5 points in the closing seconds to pull out the one-point victory. Penn Yan had a chance to win in the final seconds but could not get a shot to fall. The final buzzer sounded on the game and also the Orange and Blue basketball season. Penn Yan converted only 7 of 14 from the charity stripe and also had some costly turnovers. The Mustangs finished the season with a 12-10 record.
Dylan Stape was Penn Yan's top scorer in the game with 10 points.
Gananda 56 Marcus Whitman 43
The Marcus Whitman Wildcat boy's basketball team dropped a 56-43 decision to Gananda in the Section V Class C1 tournament Friday night in Gorham. The disappointing loss eliminated the Wildcats from the tournament. Whitman was at the top of their game as the regular season ended, winning 16 in a row before dropping their last non-league game. But they could not get untracked in their first sectional contest. The teams were tied 12-12 after the first 8 minutes. But Gananda pulled away in the second half. Marcus Whitman ends their 2016-17 season with a very fine 16-4 record.
Riley McLoud led the Wildcats on the scoring sheet. He scored 14 points and also pulled down 9 rebounds.
Lima Christian 79 Dundee 70
The Dundee Scots boy's basketball team jumped out to a 38-37 lead at the half in this quarterfinal contest played in Dundee. But the visiting Lima Christian team rallied in the second half to score a 79-70 victory over the No. 4 seed Scotsmen. The loss ends the season for the local five. The Dundee Scots finish the season with a 14-8 record.
Bobby Strait tallied 26 points to lead the Scotsmen in scoring. He had seven 3-pointers. But 23 of his 26 points came in the first half with only 3 points registered the rest of the way. Tyler Brace added 16 points.
