The Keuka College Women’s Lacrosse team used a 10-5 second half to defeat SUNY Poly 14-12 at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex April 2.
Keuka College (2-2, 1-0 NEAC) was led by Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls0 with four goals and three assist for seven total points. Freshman Vera Freda (Watertown) added to the tally with four goals and Kendall Neuberger (Penn Yan) added a pair of goals and two assists. Abigail Wood (Onondaga) and Elizabeth Sherman (Auburn) also added two goals apiece for the Wolves.
SUNY Poly found the back of the net minute into the game but the Wolves bounced back and scored just over a minute later to tie it up 1-1. The Wildcats answered with three goals to take a 4-1 lead. However freshmen Vera Freda scored three straight to tie the game at 4-4. SUNY Poly scored the final three goals of the first half to lead 7-4 at halftime.
The Wolves continued to push the offense in the second half. The Green and Gold scored the first four goals of the frame to take an 8-7 lead.
After the Wildcats took the lead back, the Wolves scored four unanswered to lead 12-9 with 10 minutes left to play. SUNY Poly had an answer and scored three straight to tie the game at 12-12. The Wolves would pull it out in the end. Abigail Wood scored off of a free position and Vera Freda added an insurance goal as the Wolves continued onto the 14-12 victory.
Sophomore Ally Thayer (Rome) played well in goal with 10 saves, earning the victory. Thayer held the Wildcats to just 3-7 on free position shots and the sophomore also collected three groundballs for the Wolves.
Coming up for Keuka College: The Wolves step out of NEAC play Tuesday for a makeup game from the weather issues earlier in the season. Keuka College will host Houghton College at 4 p.m. April 4 at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. It will be the first ever meeting between the Highlanders and the Wolves.
Keuka 19 D'Youville 7
The Keuka College Women’s Lacrosse team earned their first victory of the 2017 season on Thursday, defeating D’Youville College 19-7 at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex.
Keuka College (1-2) was led by Vera Freda (Watertown) with five goals and an assist for six total points. Kendall Neuberger (Penn Yan) and Morgan Bruno (Seneca Falls) each had five-point games for the Wolves. Neuberger had three goals and two assists while Bruno had two goals and three assists. Setting new career-highs with hat tricks was Vanessa Tsarevich (Gates-Chili) and Abigail Wood (Onondaga).
After five scoreless minutes to start the game, Keuka College got a pair of goals within nine seconds of each other to take an early 2-0 lead. The Wolves would extend the lead to 7-0 before the Spartans got on the board. Keuka College took a 13-3 lead into halftime. The Wolves kept pushing the offense in the second half, but D’Youville had responses. Twice in the half the Spartans responded to two Keuka College goals by scoring two of their own. The Wolves would never let the margin dip below 10, however, as Keuka College continued onto the 19-7 victory
Keuka College took advantage of their free position shots on Thursday. The Wolves entered the day 0-3 in free position opportunities. The Wolves went 6-8 on Thursday.
