The Penn Yan Mustang boy's lacrosse team defeated Waterloo 13-6 in the championship game of the Section V Class D Tournament. The game was played May 31 at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford. The Section V title was Penn Yan's 7th straight and 22nd overall. It was the school's first Class D title.
The Mustangs were moved to the newly formed NYS Lacrosse Class D classification this year. The win put Penn Yan's season record over .500. They are 10-9 overall. But more importantly, the Mustangs seemed to have hit their stride at the right time of the year, tournament time. Penn Yan will play the Class D winner in Section VI Saturday afternoon at St. John Fisher. The Mustangs will look to advance to the semifinals with another win. Penn Yan played in the New York State Class C championship game last year.
Penn Yan jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and held a 5-2 advantage at halftime. A 6-goal outburst in the 3rd quarter salted the victory away for the Orange and Blue. Austin Blumbergs led the Penn Yan scoring attack with 5 goals and 2 assists. Conner Fingar added 3 goals and 2 assists. He was also outstanding in the faceoff circle, winning 20 out 22 attempts. Ben Emerson tallied 2 goals and 2 assists while Dylan Stape added a goal and 2 assists. Will Rogers and Brandon Smith rounded out the Mustang scoring ledger with a goal each. Jeff Kinyoun and Kyle Welker combined for 3 saves in the nets for Penn Yan.
Fingar was awarded the Most Valuable Player award for his tournament efforts.
