Newark defeated Penn Yan Oct. 4 in Lyons.

Newark started the scoring 20 minutes into the first half. Seven minutes later Sierra Harrison scored on an assist from Hayley Andersen, and then just 4 minutes later she scored again on an assist from Brady Logan.

Penn Yan held onto the lead until the 20 minute mark of the second half, when Newark's Natalie Bates scored. Newark Camryn Pettit scored the winning goal at 4 minutes into OT.

Elle Harrison was peppered by 19 shots on goal, and she saved 16, while Penn Yan's only shots on Newark's goal were the two that counted.

The Penn Yan girls defeated Sodus 2-0 Oct. 1 on two goals by Leah Moniot. Her first goal was unassisted at minute 35 in the first half. Her second goal was assisted by Hayley Andersen at the 18 minute mark of the second half.

Elle Harrison had 3 saves. Penn Yan had 12 shots on goal.

The Marcus Whitman girls carried the lead into the final minute of regulation and had to settle for a 3-3 tie at home against Harley-Allendale Columbia Oct. 1.

Bella Cavallaro gave the Wolves an early lead with her goal in the second minute on a direct kick from about 30 yards out. Whitman answered with consecutive goals from Nichaela Commisso in the 14th and 16th minutes, the first coming from a Zoelle Payne assist and the second coming off a direct kick.

H-AC sent the game into halftime tied at 2-2 when Fiona O’Brien scored in the 24th minute.

Commisso’s third goal of the game gave Whitman a 3-2 lead in the 36th minute but H-AC found the equalizer in the 39th minute when O’Brien scored again.

Makayla Selvek made nine saves for Whitman (6-5-1).

8-Man Football

Marcus Whitman 54, Holley 6

Senior Dylan Howell rushed for 216 yards on 17 carries and caught a pass for 44 yards for 260 yards of total offense for Whitman on Senior Night Oct. 5. Howell also ran for four touchdowns, caught a TD pass and scored a 2-point conversion.

Sophomore Austin Smith rushed for 155 yards and three TDs and also scored on a 2-point conversion, and junior quarterback Seth Benedict ran for eight yards, passed for 73 and a TD and threw a 2-point conversion pass.

Whitman piled up 480 total yards, 407 on the ground and held Holley to 195 yards of total offense. That included just 26 rushing yards in the first half.

Marcus Whitman 60, Finney 34

The Wildcats (1-2) piled up 568 yards of total offense, 480 rushing, in their first win of the 8-man season Sept. 28.

Dylan Howell rushed 12 times for 305 yards and five touchdowns, Austin Smith rushed for 133 yards and two TDs on 12 carries and Austin Webster had a 37-yard TD catch.

Quarterback Seth Benedict ran for a TD and passed for 88 yards and a TD.

Penn Yan won the third game in this closely-fought match against Pal-Mac. The game scores were 24-26, 23-25, 25-22, and 22-25.

Caitlin Wunder had 18 kills. Serina Sheradin had 30 assists. Hannah Brodmann had 9 kills and 2 aces.

After this match Pal Mac 11-1 overall and 7-1 in league and Penn Yan is 6-7 overall and 4-5 in league

Newark 3, Penn Yan 1

Penn Yan won the first game 25-14 over Newark, but fell 19-25, 24-26, and 17-25 in the 3 final games of the match Oct. 2.

Caitlin Wunder had 17 kills and 3 aces in the Volleyball match against Newark.

Serina Sheradin had 27 aces and Kayla Anderson had 6.

Penn Yan traveled to Waterloo Oct. 9 before hosting Midlakes Oct. 11. They play in the Waterloo tournament Oct. 13 and then travel to Hammondsport Oct. 16.


Penn Yan golfers completed their regular season Oct. 9 with 9-3 (10-4 overall) record, and played in individual sectionals at Ontario Country Club Oct. 9.

Penn Yan golfers traveled to Silver Creek Oct. 4 to play Waterloo. Clay Koivuniemi and Max Brodmann each carded a 43 and Clark Simmons had a 44.

Penn Yan golfers defeated Pal-Mac 240 - 263 at Lakeside Country Club Oct. 3.

Clark Simmons and Peter Nicholson each carded a 47.
