High School basketball results
Basketball season is well underway throughout the Finger Lakes. In local varsity •action, the Penn Yan boys team split in games against two Rochester charter schools while the Penn Yan girls chalked up two victories.
The Marcus Whitman boys started strong with two victories and the girls had one win. In Dundee, the boys fell twice and the girls defeated Twin Tiers.
Vertus 59 Penn Yan 56
In their second game of the young season, the Penn Yan Mustangs fell to Vertus Dec. 7 in Rochester.
Devon Gerhardt paced the Mustangs with 17 points and Kyle Berna added 13.
The Mustangs battled back from a 23-10 deficit after the first quarter to pull within 7 at the half. Penn Yan out-scored Vertus in the third quarter, but as the scoring waned in the fourth, with Penn Yan out-scoring Vertus 9-6, they couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
Penn Yan 44 Rochester Prep 25
The Mustangs opened their 2019-2020 season with a solid 44 - 25 victory over Rochester Prep Charter School Dec. 5 at Penn Yan Academy. Brennan Prather scored 13 points for the Mustangs. Dominic Lafferty added 10 with Peter Nicholson pitching in 8 and Mason Kuver adding 7.
Penn Yan heads to Midlakes Dec. 13 before returning to their home court to face Newark Dec. 17.
Marcus Whitman 69 World of Inquiry 50
Jordan Lahue led the Wildcats with 21 points and Liam Prendergast had 18 points and eight rebounds. Aidan Royston had nine points and six assists for Whitman Dec. 5.
Jeshua Shaw led World of Inquiry with 22 points.
Marcus Whitman 45, Mynderse 34
Connor Tomion scored 15 points and Liam Prendergast scored 12 for the Wildcats (2-0).
Jared King had 13 points and seven rebounds for Mynderse Dec. 3.
The Wildcats host Livonia Dec. 13 before traveling to Lyons Dec. 17.
Avoca 77 Dundee 40
The Scots fell to Avoca at home Dec.3. Blake Machuga and Logan Salvatore had 8 points each
Hammondsport 57 Dundee 56
The Dundee Scots fell to Hammondsport 57-56 Dec. 4. Logan Salvatore and Steven Webster had 14 points each while Cody Salamendra added 10 and Blake Machuga had 8. The Dundee boys travel to Honeoye Dec. 10 and then face South Seneca at home Dec. 12.
Penn Yan 41 Marcus Whitman 34
Sierra Harrison let the Penn Yan Mustangs with 20 points in a home win Dec. 6. Jammie Decker added 10 points and 8 rebounds for the hometown team. Ashley Sisson tossed in 8 points and pulled down 6 rebounds while Jenna Curbeau added 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Maddie Ryan led the Wildcats with 17 points and Ari Beverly added 9. This was the Wildcats first loss of the season.
Penn Yan 49 Pittsford Sutherland 41
The Mustangs brought a victory home from Pittsford Sutherland in their first game of the season Dec. 3. Ashley Sisson led Penn Yan with 13 and Jenna Curbeau scored 11. Sierra Harrison added 7 while Jammie Decker, Hayley Andersen, and Joddie Decker each added 6.
The Mustangs host Midlakes Dec. 13.
Dundee 44 Twin Tiers 35
The Lady Scots improved to 1-1 with a 44-35 victory over Twin Tiers Dec. 3. Leading the way for the Scots was Hallie Knapp with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Makenzie Cratsley added 13 points and 11 rebounds. “It was good to get our first win out of the way, especially with our next opponent being the always tough South Seneca.,” said Coach Michael Strait.
The Lady Scots travel to South Seneca Dec. 12 and then host Campbell Dec. 16.
Marcus Whitman 49 Romulus 38
Ari Beverly had 16 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals for the Wildcats (2-0) Dec. 5.
Also for Whitman, Maddie Ryan had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks, and Emily Paddock had eight points and four steals.
