It was a big week for local varsity basketball. Penn Yan boys won a tense game in overtime against Mynderse and on the girls’ side, Dundee and Marcus Whitman faced off, with the Whitman Wildcats claiming the victory.

Jan. 6

Dundee 40 Sodus 14

The Lady Scots had a dominant performance against Sodus, winning 40-14. Mackenzie Strait led the charge, scoring 17 points and 5 rebounds. Trisha Edminster added 6 points and 2 assists. Makenzie Cratsley, Ally Wood, Savannah Eaves and Abby Miller added 4 points each. The win brings the Scots to 7-3 in the season.

Lyons 57 Marcus Whitman 48

Whitman’s Katie Deatherage scored 15 points and 7 rebounds, Maddie Ryan scored 12 points and 10 rebounds and Ari Beverly gave an impressive performance, scoring 10 points, 8 assists, 10 rebounds and 5 steals.

Marcus Whitman 41 Dundee 32

Two local teams squared off against each other on Wednesday night, with Marcus Whitman coming out on top over Dundee in a game the Wildcats controlled from the beginning. For Whitman, Katie Deatherage scored 17 points and 7 rebounds, Emily Paddock scored 9 points with 3 rebounds, while Alyssa Chase and Maddie Ryan each added 7 points. Makenzie Cratsley led Dundee’s effort with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 6 steals. Mackenzie Strait scored 10 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds. Savannah Eaves added 4 points. The game’s result brings Whitman to 7-2 for the season and Dundee to 7-4.

Mynderse 40 Penn Yan 31

For the Lady Mustangs, Sierra Harrison scored 11 points and 2 rebounds, Ashley Sisson scored 9 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals and Jenna Curbeau scored 5 points with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. The Devil’s lead shooter was MacKenzie Higby with 14 points.

Penn Yan 33 Wayne 24

Penn Yan snagged a win from Wayne Friday night. Sierra Harrison scored 10 points and 2 rebounds, Jammie Decker scored 7 points with 12 rebounds and 3 blocks and Ashley Sisson scored 7 points with 10 rebounds.

Jan. 11

Marcus Whitman 47 Bloomfield 34

The Wildcats came out ahead of the Bombers on Saturday. Maddie Ryan led Whitman’s effort with 27 points. Katie Deatherage scored 10 points and Emily Paddock added 5 points. The win brought Whitman’s record to 8-2, adding to the strong season they’ve begun to put together.

Penn Yan 74 Mynderse 64

The Mustangs took down the Mynderse Blue Devils. Though trailing in the first half, Penn Yan came out with renewed effort after halftime, leading through the second half. Mynderse rallied in the fourth period and the game was tied 63-63 at the end of regulation. The Mustangs held the Devils to 1 point in overtime, taking a 10-point win at the end of the game. For Penn Yan, Brennan Prather scored 21 points, Peter Nicholson scored 18 points and Mason Kuver added 13 points. The Mustangs’ J.V. team also took the win over Mynderse 61-56 in a close game.

Marcus Whitman 48 Hornell 61

The Wildcats lost to Hornell, bringing M.W. to 6-4 for the season. Liam Prendergast scored 14 points and 12 rebounds. Noah Hildreth added 9 points.

Jan. 9

Dundee 59 Naples 42

The Scots came home from Naples with a win under their belt. Stephen Webster scored 20 points and 11 rebounds, Logan Salvatore score 14 points and six steals and Blake Machuga helped out with eight rebounds. The win brought the Scots’ record up to 4-7 for the season. The J.V. team scored a win in overtime, 54-41.

Jan. 10

Penn Yan 41 Wayne 52

Penn Yan couldn’t pull out a win against the Wayne Eagles at home. Kyle Berna scored 14 points, Devon Gerhardt scored 9 points (all from 3-pointers) and Brennan Prather added 8 points.

Marcus Whitman 51 Early College 44

Jordan Lahue scored 19 points, including three 3-pointers, Noah Hildreth scored 10 points, Aidan Royston scored 7 points and Liam Prendergast scored 5 points and had an impressive 19 rebounds.
