Where can you get a chance to win $50 just by shopping?

Right here in Yates County.

The Yates County Chamber of Commerce and several area merchants have put together a campaign to bolster the local economy.

Joan Eldred, owner of The Nest Egg on Main Street in Penn Yan, says she’s seen some new faces in her store since the campaign began in February.

Local businessman Doug Marchionda says he and his family always try to buy locally first, and a recent purchase from a local retailer who went out of his way to satisfy him is worth noting. “If you don’t believe in shopping locally because it is the right thing to do, maybe you will shop locally because, when you include service, it is the cheapest place to do business!” he says.

Think about this:

For every $100 spent in independently owned stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. If you spend that in a national chain, only $43 stays here. Spend it online, and nothing comes home.

Here’s all you have to do to help the local economy and get a chance to win a $50 Chamber of Commerce gift certificate:

• Visit any of the participating businesses listed at and pick up your local shopping card.

• Have the card validated at five of the participating businesses.

• Drop the card in the drop box at any branch of Five Star Bank or Lyons National Bank in Yates County and you are eligible to win at $50 gift certificate. Two winners will be chosen on April 1 and May 1.
