Ontario Produce Auction opens in town of Gorham

A new produce auction facility opened for business last week at 4860 Yautzy Road in the  Ontario County town of Gorham. Spokesperson Arthur Burk says the first auction went very well at the brand new building with multiple bays.

Burk says he expects as many as 100 vendors to attend the weekly auctions on Thursdays. Beginning next spring, produce auctions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. and in the summer Friday evening auctions will be added.

The auction facility will also host consignment machinery auctions twice annually, and other auctions when possible. The first equipment auction was held Oct. 27.

Many of the vendors have been using the Finger Lakes Produce Auction on Route 14A in Barrington. The new auction outlet gives them another option — perhaps closer to their businesses or farms, says Burk.

With 75 shareholders, the auction is managed by a board of directors.

Once the funds were raised for construction and plans were complete, the ground was broken in July and the final details were finished just days before the first auction.
