Keuka groups present dinner theatre May 7
The Keuka College Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Arion Players present a staged reading of “By the Way, Meet Vera Stark” Thursday, May 7 as dinner theatre.
Directed by Mark Wenderlich, the 2011 sharp-toothed comedy from Pulitzer Prize–winner, Lynn Nottage, draws upon the screwball films of the 1930s to take an irreverent look at racial stereotypes in Hollywood through the life of Vera Stark, a headstrong African-American maid and budding actress, and her tangled relationship with her boss, a white Hollywood star desperately grasping to hold on to her career.
Hilarious yet poignant, the play paints a vivid picture of the cultural climate that shaped this mysterious screen queen whose eventual fame came at the price of perpetuating racist stereotypes.
