Sunnyside opening day in 2016

The Arts Center of Yates County’s lakeside facility, Sunny Point will open for the season on Sunday, June 4 with a chicken barbecue fundraiser, live music, wine and beer tastings and family activities. The property, on the east side of Keuka Lake about eight miles from Penn Yan, was given to the Arts Center a decade ago as an estate gift from University of Toronto Art History professor Dr. Annie Smith. The Arts Center uses the white cottage at Sunny Point to house visiting instructors as well as housing two resident artists each summer. The “red barn” studio space, which includes a large lakeside screened porch, is used for summer classes and a variety of events. This summer also marks the opening of Annie’s Boathouse Pottery, a fully equipped pottery studio located a few feet from the edge of Keuka Lake.

Yates County residents, visitors, and artists will have the opportunity to experience Sunny Point throughout the summer in a variety of ways. Creative workshops planned for the property include candle making, jewelry design, Art & Vine classes, Plein Air painting with George Van Hook and Kevin Feary and porcelain painting with nationally known artist Mary Gosden. There will be a variety of pottery classes in the Boathouse studio, including slab building classes with Kim Cutler, raku classes, hand and wheel-building and weekly “open studio” time for potters to work on individual projects and techniques. Virginia Beach mixed media artist Melissa Schappell and Syracuse photographer Nancy Kiefer will be spending time at Sunny Point as artists-in-residence and the Arts Center plans another open house in August for an “empty bowls” ice cream social fundraising event.

Everyone is invited to come explore and enjoy Sunny Point on Sunday, June 4th from 1-4 pm. While the event is free, tickets are $10 each for the chicken barbecue meal provided by Eastside Grill. Meals can be picked up by car or boat or enjoyed onsite. Ravines Winery will provide wine tastings, the Brewery of Broken Dreams will provide beer tastings and Troy Cusson will provide musical entertainment. Several fun activities will be available in the red barn and the pottery will be open to meet the summer intern and pick up information on open studio time and ceramics workshops. Call 315-536-8226 to purchase barbecue tickets or for more information. Sunny Point is located at 869 East Lake Road in Dundee (follow the signs).
