Water Street Wine Bar opens to popular praise
Ray and Sandi Spencer, the owners of the successful Water Street Wines & Spirits, have now quietly opened their next commercial venture right next door.
The Water Street Wine Bar (WSWB), located on the lower level of Birkett Landing facing the Keuka Lake Outlet, opened without fanfare last week as the newest member of the Water Street revitalization.
As the first retail tenant of renovated Birkett Mills warehouses in Penn Yan, recently converted into luxury rental apartments, WSWB fits with its neighbors perfectly, and offers a sophisticated, intimate atmosphere unmatched in Penn Yan.
The wine list, while still developing, can meet any taste from the darkest, richest Cabernet Sauvignons to bright and crisp Dry Rieslings, for which the Finger Lakes have become famous, to sweeter local favorites. Local craft beers are also on tap.
With the selection of wines is offered a light tapas-style menu, with flatbread pizzas, a variety of “Breads & Spreads,” and a selection of cheese and charcuterie boards.
The offerings for the polished palate are matched by the stylish décor that has a a unique Finger Lakes feel.
Dan Mitchell, of Staving Artist Woodworks in Barrington, handmade 10 barstools in his signature style – wood reclaimed from wine barrels – that are as attractive as they are comfortable. The serving bar was locally crafted from butternut, a rare hardwood, harvested 35 years ago near Hall, and just waiting all this time for a project special enough.
With a fireplace and comfortable couches and chairs, cafe tables, and soft lighting, patrons quickly feel at home, or rather at a more idealized version of home. As warmer weather arrives, outdoor seating will be added for people to enjoy the waterfront of the Keuka Lake Outlet, where docks are available for those who wish to arrive by boat.
Staffed by Sandi and Ray and their son, Everett, that family feel is as unmistakable as their love of wine, and their desire to bring a new element to the hospitality of Penn Yan.
The Water Street Wine Bar is open from 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4 - 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 - 6 p.m. Sunday; closed Monday and Tuesday. The drive is located to the west of Water Street Wines & Spirits.
