A Finger Lakes Vineyard.

The Dundee Area Historical Society will host a program on the History of Wine in the Finger Lakes at 5:30 p.m. July 19 at Bellangelo Winery overlooking Seneca Lake at 150 Poplar Point Road, Dundee.

A baked ziti dinner will be followed at 7 p.m. by a talk on the History of Wine in the Finger Lakes.

Speakers will be Susan Spence, vice president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation, the statewide trade association for grape growers; Christian Claessens, from Belgium, an importer of New York wines to Europe; and Chris Missick, author of A Sense of Place which tells the history and modern day story of the Bellangelo Winery.

In 2011 the Missick family moved from California to take over the Bellangelo Winery and focus on the production of authentic, high quality Riesling, Cab Franc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir.

The first record of winemaking in the Finger Lakes dates back to 1829 when Rev. William Bostwick, an Episcopal minister in Hammondsport planted grapes in his rectory garden. Commercial wineries began in 1862 with the founding of the Hammondsport and Pleasant Valley Wineries. There is much to learn about New York’s wine industry. It has had a wide impact on the world industry.

Vineyards of Europe were almost wiped out by phylloxera, a root louse, which was transported to Europe and beyond by grape breeders moving rootstock from the U.S. to Europe. Find out how our root stock saved the day.

Don’t miss out on this fascinating evening! Before dinner, taste five wines for $2.50. Wine by the glass or bottle can be purchased to enjoy with your meal. Space is limited, so make your reservation soon. Call the Society at 607-243-7047 or email DundeeHistory@live.com. The cost of this dinner program is $12 for Society members or $16 for non-members. Reservations are needed no later than 5 p.m. Friday, July 15.
