A touch of Paris in the spring is on the menu for the next “Bistro Night” March 14 at Water Street Wine Bar in Penn Yan.

The Tuesday night events at WSWB each feature a different cultural cuisine, such as last night’s Indian food, and are being praised by local gourmands as exceptional in quality and as a new culinary experience for the area.

New owners Stefan and Mary Ann Lewandowski have taken the Bistro Night concept begun by previous owner Ray Spencer, and run with it. Chef Ben Comstock & Chef Heidi Fecik are preparing meals never seen in local restaurants before.

“There is no place in Penn Yan with food like this,” says Stefan. “We’re excited, delighted, and surprised by the tremendous response,” says Mary Ann. Given the support from their local customers, WSWB will donate a portion of the proceeds from French Bistro Night to Milly’s Pantry for their efforts to feed the food-insecure children of Yates County.

Along with the wine or beer of the diners’ choice, the menu, created by Chefs Ben Comstock and Heidi Fecik for French Bistro Night, includes:

Appetizer: Smoked salmon and lentil salad with an herbed lemon viniagrette

Entrée: Pork noisettes, roasted fingerling potatoes, and brussel sprouts with sauce chasseur

Dessert: Chocolate pot de créme with French vanilla macaron.

Chef Ben grew up in Penn Yan. He holds an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts from Alfred State. After school, he worked at the Esperanza, Greg Norman’s Australian Grille in Myrtle Beach, and Marina Inn at Grand Dunes in Myrtle Beach, one of the few four-star hotels in South Carolina. Ben has been a Culinary Instructor/Sous Chef at the New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua, and a Garde/Fish at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant, Spago, in the Four Seasons Resort in Wailea, Hawaii.

Chef Heidi, a Marcus Whitman alumna, graduated top of her class with honors from the Art Institute of Philadelphia for baking and pastry 8 years ago. She has previously worked at Ithaca Bakery, Dallywater’s as both Executive Chef and Pastry Chef, Suzanne’s Fine Regional Cuisine as Assistant Pastry Chef and Garde Manger, and most recently at The Flour Shop here in Penn Yan. In addition to creating desserts for Water Street, she is developing her own custom wedding cake business.

The remaining Bistro Nights will be March 21, featuring a menu from Spain, and March 28 that will be Thai/Asian cuisine. If the popularity of the event continues to grow, Mary Ann says they will consider extending into April.
