Some of the faithful volunteers and team members who make Yates County’s Relay for Life one of the biggest and best in the region got together Sunday for the 2014 Kick-off event at Top of the Lake in Penn Yan.

Relay for Life of Yates County held its kickoff event Sunday at Top of the Lake in Penn Yan, highlighting the push to organize teams and raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Survivors, their family and friends, and those  who wish to remember those taken by the increasingly pervasive disease, stage an annual all-night walk, and raise money by contributions and the sale of commemorative luminarias.

So far, 13 teams have registered, and their 77 participants have raised $2,083.68.

“Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event that empowers everyone to help fight cancer by raising money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. Teams of people camp out at the Penn Yan Fireman’s Field and take turns walking or running around the track. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.”
