Why vote in 2016? In this election season, there are many reasons and many important issues at stake. To help unravel some of the biggest issues, the Yates County Democratic Committee invites the public to four free noon to 1 p.m. programs (bag lunches welcome, coffee and cookies provided) at party headquarters, 7 Main St. in Penn Yan.

Each talk will open with a taped Ted Talk or one of similar quality, to be followed by discussion on the topic and its local implications. TED (an acronym for technology, entertainment and design), debuted at a 1984 conference on these subjects. Now the powerful, short (12 to 20-minute) talks by experts cover virtually everything. The four topics chosen for study in Penn Yan on upcoming Thursdays are:

• Oct.  6 “Healthcare”

• Oct. 13 “Immigration”

• Oct. 27 “Jobs/Wages/Inequality”

• Nov. 3 “Climate Change”

To further clarify topics, excerpts from both Democratic and Republican platforms will be handed out at the four programs. Anyone interested in the subjects but unable to meet on scheduled days, can access the video talks and handouts by liking Yates County Democrats on Facebook. The public is also welcome to stop at the headquarters any weekday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Saturdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. between now and the Nov. 8 election. Questions can go to Peggy Soule at 315-536- 9710 or Val Brechko at 315-694-6604.

The Yates County Democratic Committee endorsed Matthew Conlon, winner of the Democratic Primary, for County Judge at their Sept. 17 Annual Meeting. They also chose Val Brechko and Rich Stewart as Co-Chairs, Susan Close as Vice-Chair, Ruth Bouchard as Secretary, David Soule as Treasurer, and Susan Wolff as Deputy Treasurer.
