All around the area, big, bright orange pumpkins dot the roadside stands, farm markets and picking patches, but in the Penn Yan area, pink pumpkins are beginning to take their share of the spotlight.

For a second year, the Penn Yan Chapter of FFA has teamed up with The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation, a non-profit organization that funds breast cancer research, to sell pink pumpkins just in time for October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

These pumpkins are available now at Penn Yan Academy and a few roadside stands in the Penn Yan area. The pink-skinned “China Doll” pumpkins are on display at the Academy.

This project has been spearheaded by the Penn Yan Chapter of FFA Officer team, and Lilyea Farms on Pre-Emption Road of Penn Yan which donated space in a field and care through the growing season.

This year’s weather and optimal soil conditions have produced a bounty of nice-size and shape pink skinned pumpkins, says John Kriese, Penn Yan Academy agriculture instructor and FFA Advisor. Last year, the FFA leadership team learned about a young FFA member in Western Kansas who was attempting to create a national awareness about breast cancer, and was encouraging FFA Chapters to grow the new pumpkins and donate the proceeds to the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation.

The Penn Yan Chapter of FFA has joined with The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation as part of its national campaign, “Pink Pumpkins on Your Porch – Let’s Unite Against Breast Cancer.” This campaign is designed to encourage consumers to join the fight against breast cancer by placing pink pumpkins on their porches and in their homes as a part of Halloween and autumn décor.

The China Doll Pink Skinned Pumpkins can be purchased through October for a$10 donation. Look for them at Cody McIntyre’s roadside stands near Dresden and at the Morgan’s on Rte. 364.  To order yours, contact any FFA member of John Kriese at 315-536-4408 ext. 134 or email jkriese@pycsd.org.
