With the new planters at the Homestead are Dresden Troop #82 Scouts (from left): Chandler Jensen, Jonathan Griner, Jacob Eskildsen, Reid Castner, Donald Griner, Will Jenkins and Ryan Danson. Homestead residents: Bill Phillips and Nancy Anderson, seated, and Ron Norris and Darlene Smith, standing.

Dresden Boy Scout Troop #82 recently built standing planters for residents of The Homestead in Penn Yan.

Loree MacKerchar, Manager of Community Relations for Finger Lakes Health, says one of the planter boxes was created in memory of Ross Swim, a resident who lived in one of Finger Lakes Health’s Geneva Living Centers, and later moved to The Homestead.

Ross enjoyed gardening, so they decided to have someone build a planter for that purpose. Unfortunately, he did not get to use it, but other residents will have the gardening opportunity he inspired – the enjoyment of digging in the soil and helping flowers and vegetables grow.

Supplies were donated by: Knapp & Schlappi (lumber), Pinckney Hardware (paint), Horning’s Greenhouse (soil) Locust Grove & Benton Berries (flowers & vegetable plants)
