Dancers from the Advanced Pointe class of the “Go Light Your World” ballet school take to the air in rehearsal for Saturday’s recital at Dundee Central School.

What’s a plié?  A jeté?  An entrechat?

A brief demonstration of these and other dance moves sets the stage for a full-length ballet recital this Saturday evening at Dundee Central School.  Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. and admission is $5 for adults, with children eight and under admitted free.

Performers are from Dundee’s own “Go Light Your World” ballet school and they’re featured in 10 different numbers, starting with “a zippy opening piece that will make you want to dance” according to Emily Thompson, company ballet mistress.

The nine numbers that follow range from solos and small-group performances displaying individual talents to a stage-filling finale that brings together the entire company.

For Lynn Sutherland of Dundee, owner and manager of the school, the recital offers the community a chance to see the progress students are making, while giving students the invaluable experience of performing before an audience.

Sutherland, a “ballet mom” with two daughters as students, acquired the school (formerly Seneca School of Ballet) when the previous owners put it up for sale.

She noted at the time, “I was too passionate about it to back away.”

Sutherland reopened the doors in January with Thompson as ballet mistress.

Originally a Seneca student herself,  Thompson went on to advanced training at Ithaca Ballet Guild and Ballet Magnificat and with Rafael Grigorian, former principal dancer of the Kirov and Bolshoi ballet companies, and at Hobart & William Smith’s highly praised dance program, where she currently studies.

Saturday’s recital marks the closing of the school for the summer.

A new term begins in September with classes that cover several levels, from beginners (as young as four) to Advanced Pointe.
