Howie Hawkins, co-chair of the New York State Green Party, will be the speaker at the April meeting of the Yates County Progressives, to be held Sunday, April 17, at Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport.

Hawkins garnered nearly 60,000 votes in the 2010 New York gubernatorial race, assuring that the Green Party will be listed on election ballots for the next four years.  A Syracuse resident and former Marine, Hawkins was a co-founder of the Clamshell anti-nuclear alliance and of the Green Party of the United States.

During his campaign for governor, Hawkins advocated single-payer health care, a ban on hydrofracking for the extraction of natural gas, fully-funded public schools and colleges, and a clean energy transition to prevent a climate catastrophe.  He also called for progressive tax reform with the aim of putting New Yorkers back to work.  Hawkins plans to address these topics on Sunday, and will also discuss the budget problems afflicting New York and the federal government.

Sunday’s meeting gets underway with a social hour at 6 p.m., with Hawkins’ address slated for 7 p.m.
