This year's Chair-ish Keuka Lake Gala Auction will be held on Sunday, July 12  in the Geiser Dining Room at Keuka College. Viewing will begin at noon and bidding will begin at 1 p.m.

In 2008 the Yates ARC introduced Chair-ish Keuka Lake, a fundraising event to auction off unique, hand painted Adirondack rocking chairs.

The event was a major success, drawing entries from dozens of artists and attracting enthusiastic bidders who enjoyed an afternoon of wine tasting, hors d'oeuvres and browsing at Keuka College.

All proceeds benefit the Yates ARC, a local non-profit organization making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

Tickets are $15 each, which covers admission to the auction event, hors d'oeuvres adn wine tasting. Pre-sale tickets are $12, available at Yates ARC, Longs' Cards & Books and Lorrie's Hair Salon in Penn Yan.

Dozens of artists spend several creative hours decorating their chairs.

"The ARC Chair Auction brings for me a way to push the limits of what is expected and as a professional artist, I feel it is needed to push the bar significantly higher than average.  It is my duty as a trained sculptor to bring a sense of reality check to the public," says artist Sam Castner about  his unique creation. Castner is known for finding various waste materials to be recycled through his studio to give them new life.

This year's creation incorporates materials left over from installing local wells. Castner cut down well casings to fabricate a large sculpture of rings.

"By taking the very heavy material out of its normal environment and transforming it into a filigree form, it is light and airy," he says.

The vibrant candy apple red Adirondack chair is inviting, close enough to the touch, but forever encased in the sphere of rings.

Castner will deliver and install the piece after the auction.

Chairs are displayed throughout the community at sponsor locations. Brochures and posters promote the artists and sponsors.

The chairs were built by Walter Fox of Finger Lakes Lawn Furniture.
