Local business owners Jim and Gloria Long will receive the 2011 Donald and Corinne Stork Award for Community Service Tuesday, Oct. 11.

The award will be given at a noon luncheon in the Geiser Refectory at Keuka College.

The Longs are owners of Longs’ Cards and Books in Penn Yan, and the business has become a downtown anchor. It carries a variety of books, cards, office supplies, and gifts, and hosts book signings for local authors. The store was opened in 1969 by Jim Long’s parents.

Like the award’s previous recipients, the Longs have been highly involved in the community.

Gloria has volunteered extensively at St. Michael’s Church and St. Michael’s School, holding leadership positions on the Principal’s Advisory Committee, Parish Council, and Parent Alumni Council. She established and serves on the St. Michael’s School Development Committee, and started the Golf and Ski Clubs. She  is a board member of Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes, and a past board member of St. Mark’s Terrace, and the American Red Cross. She has taken part in the PYE Reading Role Model program and HUBBA events.

Jim serves on the boards of Finger Lakes Health, the Finger Lakes Economic Development Center, Yates Community Center, and Lyons National Bank Community Advisory Board. He has also been a member of the boards at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital and Foundation, Rushville Health Center, Penn Yan Public Library, Literacy Volunteers and the Yates County Chamber of Commerce.

The Longs served on the Keuka College President’s Advisory Council from 2006-09, are active Keuka College Golf Classic sponsors. They helped with the Keuka Comfort Care Home’s Krossin’ Keuka event and the Red Cross Salute to 9/11 in 2010.

The Stork Award was established by Keuka College to recognize outstanding individuals who exemplify the College’s commitment of valuing individual initiative for the common good. The award was named after the first recipients of the award, Penn Yan residents Donald and Corinne Stork, in 1991.

Tickets for the luncheon are $12. Seating is limited, so reservations are advised. Make checks payable to Keuka College and mail to: Office of Alumni and Family Relations, Keuka College, Keuka Park, N.Y. 14478. The reservation deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 4.
