The 2015 Elks Hoop Shoot will be held in the Penn Yan Elementary gym Saturday, Jan. 10. The doors will open for registration at 8:30 a.m., and the contestants will he able to warm up for approximately one half hour, followed by the actual contest itself.  This affair is open to both boys and girls ages 8-13 with the official age being that of the youngster on April 1, 2015. If he/she will be at least 8 years old, and not reach birthday number 14 by the above date, then he or she is eligible.

Contestants will shoot five warm-up shots, and then 25 shots for their score. In case of ties, each individual goes back and shoots five more shots until the tie is broken. First and second place finishers receive a trophy and the winners at each level move on to the District contest, which will again be held here in Penn Yan Saturday, Jan. 24.

The district contest will match winners from Watkins Glen, Elmira, Ithaca, Horseheads, and Corning for the chance to move on to the Western Regional contest in early February. Those winners go on to the New York State finals, and then to the Tri-State level, where they match up against winners from Pennsylvania and New Jersey for the right to head to the National Finals held in Springfield, Mass. in April.

Contestants are divided into age groups so there are actually six categories: boys ages 8/9, girls ages 8/9, boys ages 10/11, girls ages 10/11, and finally boys ages 12/13 and girls ages 12/13.

The girls in all age brackets use the official girls basketball and that same basketball is used for boys ages 8/9. Boys ages 10/11 and 12/13 use the official boys basketball, and there is one more slight rule modification. The boys and girls ages 8/9 shoot from a distance of 11 feet as opposed to the official distance of 15 feet that the remaining groups must shoot from.

So, if you have a youngster who falls within the age confines listed and he or she is looking for something to do on Saturday, Jan. 10, bring him or her to the Penn Yan Elementary gym and try his/her luck at free throw shooting. Who knows? You might have a champion right in your home and don’t even realize it. It could be, as has been in many cases before, the start of something big.
