Pilot Jim Poel dies in Florida

Officials at the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport have confirmed that local pilot Jim Poel, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29 in Florida.

“It’s a great loss to the museum,” said Curtiss Museum Director Trafford Doherty Tuesday morning.

Poel, a retired commercial pilot, flew some of the Curtiss replica aircraft built at the museum. He was seriously injured when one he was piloting, the Albany Flyer, crashed near Penn?Yan Airport last June (see related story).

A memorial service will be held in Florida on Saturday.
