Coleman punishment stands

In an appeal initiated by the Dundee Central School, Yates County Judge W. Patrick Falvey says the Yates County Supreme Court does not have the authority to change the punishment imposed on teacher Douglas Coleman, who has been suspended three times by the school.

School officials had asked Falvey to rule that the district could dismiss Coleman,  found guilty of multiple counts of conduct unbecoming a teacher in the state tenure disciplinary process. The punishment that was imposed by the 3020A Hearing Officer Dennis Campagna consisted of an unpaid six month suspension which ended Feb. 1.

The school district appealed that punishment, seeking the right to fire Coleman.

Last fall, a ruling by Falvey sent the case back to Campagna, who then found Coleman guilty of additional charges, but did not stiffen the punishment.
