Supporting the troops

The latest shipment of boxes headed overseas from the Penn Yan Moose Lodge was packaged and ready to go in early November. This project is obviously a labor of love for those who help with the process.

In September 2005, a Troop Box Gift Box project was initiated at the Penn Yan Moose Lodge to lend support to our military men and women serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The first shipment consisted of donations from not only Moose Lodge members but from the community of Penn Yan, as well.

From that first shipment in 2005 to the most recent one on Nov. 7, the Moose Lodge has sent a total of 1,086 boxes in 18 different shipments to our military personnel.

Those who work on the project each year say they are proud to support the troops while they fight to defend our citizens’ freedom.

At right, Cragg Chaffee presents a check in the amount of $500 to Penn Yan Moose Lodge Gov. Chip Orr and Past Senior Regent Marilyn Parmelee to help defray shipping costs for gift boxes to active military men and women. This is the third annual donation Mr. Chaffee has presented to the Penn Yan Moose. He is a veteran and fully understands the importance of receiving letters and packages from family and friends back home.
