Heat advisory for Tuesday: Heat index could peak between 97 and 102

 The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday for the Finger Lakes and greater Syracuse area.

Heat index values will peak from 97 to 102 Tuesday afternoon and early evening. By early Tuesday afternoon, temperatures will soar close to 90 degrees and combine with high humidity to being heat index values to around 100 degrees for the balance of Tuesday afternoon and early evening. By later Tuesday evening, showers and thunderstorms will likely affect the region, dropping temperatures significantly in addition to the normal night time fall in temperatures.

The high heat and humidity will make for dangerous conditions for those working or playing outdoors if proper precautions are not taken. The highest heat index values will be found in the more urbanized areas.


Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside Tuesday afternoon and evening. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or late evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce the risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool & shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911.
